Master's program in science communication open [Brazil]

Journalists who want to specialize in science communication can apply for a free program in Campinas, São Paulo.

This master's program in scientific and cultural communication is offered by the State University of Campinas' Laboratório de Estudos Avançados em Jornalismo (Labjor). Classes start in 2018.

The course aims to train professional journalists and scientists in science communication and bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and everyday life.

Candidates must submit a writing sample and resume. The selection process also includes a writing test in Portuguese, an English proficiency test and an interview.

The deadline to apply is Aug. 25.

Africa Climate Change Fund launches second call for proposals

The Africa Climate Change Fund (ACCF), housed in the Climate Change and Green Growth Department of the African Development Bank (AfDB), is launching a call for proposals.

The funding envelope available for this call is US $5 million in the form of grants. The Fund is seeking concept notes for projects and programmes in the range of US $250,000 – US $ 1 million.

Focus Areas and themes:

The ACCF is seeking innovative and impactful proposals that will support African countries to transition to climate resilient, low carbon development, and scale-up access to climate finance. Priority will be given to proposals focused on the thematic areas: supporting direct access to climate finance; and supporting small–scale or pilot adaptation initiatives to build resilience of vulnerable communities.

 Proposals should be aligned with the priorities of the Bank, including the 10-year strategy (which aims for inclusive growth and a transition to green growth) and the High-Five priorities (which aim to light up and power Africa, feed Africa, industrialize Africa, integrate Africa, and improve the quality of life for the people of Africa), as well as with the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) or related adaptation strategies of the beneficiary countries.

This call for proposals is open to all eligible beneficiaries of the ACCF, including African governments, regional organizations, funds, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and research institutions, as well as Bank departments. Proposals from consortia are allowed, as long as all members of the consortium are eligible beneficiaries.

Training focuses on extractive industries reporting [Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea]

Journalists interested in covering the extractive industries can apply for workshops in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, and in Conakry, Guinea. 

The Thomson Reuters Foundation, in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ), is organizing workshops Sept. 27 to 29, as part of its extractive reporting program. 

The program seeks to build the capacity of media in Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea to cover the mining and other extractive industries.

Selected participants will also editorial support and a small reporting grant. 

The deadline is Aug. 17.

Press Release: IPC decries attack on JOURNALISTS at Kaduna NUJ Secretariat

The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria has decried the unwarranted attack on Journalists and the invasion of the Kaduna Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) by alleged political thugs during a press conference by some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State on Monday, July 31, 2017

The journalists, Lawal Mohammed of Liberty TV and an unnamed cameraman with the African Independent Television (AIT) were brutalized while their working tools including cameras, cell phones and recorders were also reportedly destroyed.

Lanre Arogundade, Director IPC said the action of the thugs and their sponsors was not acceptable as they should have sought other means of ventilating their grievances within the structure of their political party of which the NUJ secretariat is not one.

“The Press Unions exist to uphold the tenets of freedom of speech and freedom of expression, instead of the aggrieved members taking laws into its hands and unleashing attacks on the journalists, they should avail themselves of the opportunity provided for right of reply in the media”, Mr Arogundade added.

He called on the Kaduna State Police Command to urgently investigate the matter and ensure the arrest and prosecution of the culprits.

Youth photojournalism contest open [Worldwide]

Photographers under age 24 and those enrolled as full-time photography students can apply for the scholarship.

The Ian Parry Scholarship aims to help young documentary photographers undertake a chosen project and raise their international profile.

This year's contest features two prizes: the Award for Achievement and the Award for Potential. Each winner will receive GBP3,500 (US$4,581), Canon photo equipment and more. 

World Press Photo automatically nominates the Achievement winner for its Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam. The Potential winner will receive one year of mentorship from photojournalist Simon Roberts.

There is no entry fee. The deadline to apply is Sept. 1.
