Independent media companies, nonprofits and new ventures can apply for funding.
The South Africa Media Innovation Program has launched its innovation challenge for projects and organizations that are building news and information products that engage and inform local or underserved communities.
Projects must address one or more of the following focus areas: digital native products; reaching rural communities; searching for new ways to connect people with information; engaging people in official languages that are underserved; technology innovation for distribution; new revenue opportunities; and transition to digital.
The total grant funding is ZAR3,000,000, with up to ZAR500,000 per project. Winners will also receive expert advice, mentorship and training to help them develop a viable media product or platform.
The deadline is Oct. 31.
