Katherine Schneider Journalism Award focuses on disability issue[ US]

Journalists from print, broadcast and online outlets can submit their stories to this contest.

The Katherine Schneider Journalism Award for Excellence in Reporting on Disability is a national journalism contest devoted exclusively to disability coverage. It is administered by the National Center on Disability and Journalism, headquartered at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.

The contest features the Large Media Market Awards and the Small Media Market Awards. Winners receive US$2,500 for first place, US$1,000 for second place and US$500 for third place.

Entries must have been published or aired between July 1, 2019 and July 31, 2020. Works from outside the United States are accepted but must be in English. Special consideration will be given to entries that are accessible to those with disabilities.

The deadline is Aug. 7.

Online Course on equity, ethics in data journalism available [Worldwide]

Journalists interested in data journalism can participate in this four-week course.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, through its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), hosts the free course “Equity and ethics in data journalism: hands-on approaches to getting your data right” June 22 to July 19.

The course is divided into four modules covering: essential concepts in equity and ethics for data journalism; gathering and collecting data for your data story; analyzing data for your data story; and visualizing and communicating data for your data story.

The instructor is data expert Heather Krause, founder of  Datassist and We All Count, a project for equity in data. 

The course is accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

British Embassy funds projects on COVID-19 impact [Ukraine]

 Civil society organizations and government bodies can apply for funding for their projects.

The British Embassy in Kyiv's International Program COVID-19 Enabling Fund, which is part of the UK’s global response to COVID-19 challenges, is accepting applications for funding projects.

The program's focus areas are fight against spread of disinformation around COVID-19, anti-corruption efforts and impact of COVID-19 on the local economy.

Successful projects should have sustainable outcomes and clearly identify the change that will be brought about.

The maximum funding amount is GBP5,000 per project. All projects must be implemented by March 15, 2021.

The deadline to apply is June 15.

Civitates offers grants for public interest journalism [Europe]

Independent journalism organizations can apply for funding.

Civitates is accepting proposals for grants for public interest journalism in Europe.

The fund will provide multi-year commitments for general operating support and the institutional strengthening of its grantee partners.

Applicants must be registered as nonprofit organizations, with at least 12 months of active coverage and produce in-depth journalism. 

Grant amounts may vary depending on the size and scope of the plans proposed.

IPC condemns unlawful detention of Secret Reporters Editor-in-Chief

The International Press Centre condemns the unlawful detention of Tega Oghenedoro, Editor- in-Chief of Secret reporters by the Department of State Services in Asaba, Delta State

Mr Oghenedoro now released, is popularly known by his pen name ‘Fejiro Oliver’ was detained for over twenty-four hours at the instance of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, following a story he published on the alleged robbery incident in the Delta State Government House according to report by Sahara reporters dated June 2, 2020

In a statement Lanre Arogundade, Executive Director, IPC said his detention by security operatives was illegal and unconstitutional, thereby violating his right to freedom of expression guaranteed under the constitution

“Journalists have constitutional obligation to report issues of interest to the public and should not be barred or harassed in the course of such reportorial duties” he asserted

Mr Arogundade urged the government officials to uphold democratic principles and refrain from abusive use of power and office to muzzle journalists and the other independent voices at the faintest criticism

GIJN ; Vacancy exists for French editor [Africa]

Francophone investigative journalists and data journalists with five to 10 years of experience and based in subsaharan Africa can apply. 

The Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) is looking for a French editor to help build and consolidate the investigative journalism networks and organization in francophone Africa.  

Responsibilities include aggregating and distributing content relevant to investigative journalists in the region;

serving as GIJN’s representative at regional conferences and other events; and more.

Applicants must have an excellent knowledge and mastery of oral and written French, the ability to communicate in English and experience managing social media. A strong broadband connection is required.

International contest seeks short documentaries [Worldwide]

Professional and amateur documentarians who live in one of the 38 megacities around the world are invited to enter this contest.

Megacities Shortdocs hosts an international contest with festivals held in megacities to support the making of short documentaries raising awareness about urban challenges and solutions.

Documentaries must be up to 4 minutes long and cover issues and local initiatives in a megacity, covered by one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals from the United Nations. Possible topics include mobility, energy, health, accommodation, supply, business, security, communication, culture and education.

The best shortdocs will be exhibited during the festivals around the world. Winners will receive a trip to Paris and up to EUR1,500 (US$1,667).

The deadline is Aug. 31.

Journalism Award focuses on COVID-19 reporting [Worldwide]

Journalists covering the COVID-19 pandemic can enter this new contest.

The American Society of Journalists and Authors has launched the COVID-19 Writing Awards. 

The contest has nine categories: business and economy, education, health care, mental health, personal essays, politics and government, science, social adaptation, and technology.

Works must have been published between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2020 in English anywhere in the world. The entry fee is US$15 for ASJA members and US$25 for non-members. Members of other nonprofit organizations pay US$20.

Winners will receive cash prizes.

Fundo Positivo offers funds for health projects [Brazil]

Nonprofits can compete for funds for digital campaigns.

Fundo Positivo invites proposals for its sixth public call for projects.

The theme is "Digital health: Prevention and care for sexually transmitted diseases/HIV/ AIDS - Health and sexual rights through digital technologies actions in the pandemic of COVID-19."

The initiative aims to support projects that will strengthen and/or expand community-based prevention efforts, through new technologies. Possible topics include sexually transmitted diseases, as well as sexual and reproductive health, and COVID-19 prevention.

The maximum funding per project is BRL30,000.

Project focuses on innovative COVID-19 stories [Worldwide]

Immersive media creators are invited to share their vision of a post-pandemic world that meets the Sustainable Development Goals.

MY World 360°, a project led by UN SDG Action Campaign, Digital Promise and Oculus, is looking for stories of people making a difference in the face of COVID-19 and creative visions for a better world.

Stories may combine of any type of media combination: from pen and paper with an audio recording, to augmented reality, virtual reality or 3D design.

Selected stories will be shared as part of the MY World 360º Selection and showcased as part of United Nations events and campaigns.

Participants will connect with other MY World 360º creators from around the world, develop their skills and access mentoring and sharing opportunities.
