Journalists who want to cover COVID-19 within their own communities can apply for this fund.

National Geographic has launched the COVID-19 Emergency Fund for Journalists.

The fund will range from US$1,000 to US8,000 for local coverage of the preparation, response and impact of the global coronavirus pandemic.

Proposals must emphasize delivering news to underserved populations, particularly where there is a dearth of evidence-based information getting to those who need it. Local and even hyper-local distribution models are encouraged.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. All materials must be in English.

Grants for coronavirus reporting available [US]

Journalists of color covering the impact of the coronavirus in U.S. ethnic communities are invited to apply for this program. 

The Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) seeks proposals on the coronavirus crisis that break new ground and expose wrongdoing in the public and private sectors.

Grants will average US$5,000 and are intended for out-of-pocket expenses such as travel, document collection and equipment rental. FIJ also considers requests for small stipends.

Proposals will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

Escola de Dados offers course on data communication [Brazil]

Escola de Dados offers the course "Dados 360" starting May 25.

The course aims to provide an overview of the area for those who want to start working with data.

The content will be divided into five one-week modules: fundamentals and data collection; introduction to programming and databases; data analysis; data visualization; and working with texts, maps and social media.

Grants available for documentary projects [Jordan]

Jordanian filmmakers and Arab filmmakers residing in Jordan for at least five years can apply for this fund.

The Royal Film Commission in Jordan (RFC) established the Jordan Film Fund (JFF) to enable filmmakers to tell their stories, develop the independent film industry and contribute to its sustainability.

Applicants can submit feature-length narrative and documentary projects (60 minutes and above) at their development, production and post-production stages, and short narrative, documentary and animated films (5 to 25 minutes) at production stage only.

Population Reference Bureau offers Training for women journalists on COVID-19 reporting [South Asia]

Women journalists in senior-level positions can apply for a training program.

The Population Reference Bureau (PRB) is seeking applications for its Women’s Edition South Asia program, an international network of leading female journalists interested in health and development. 

From April to September, fellows will receive training on how COVID-19 affects migration and population, family planning and reproductive health.

Participants will engage in a series of virtual classes, networking events and story development workshops providing in-depth information and coaching on these topics. Fellows will also be eligible for reporting grants to support their stories. 

Three to five women journalists from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan will be selected to participate, joining returning journalists from its 2019 cohort. English proficiency is required.

Mesa Refuge accepting candidates for writing residency [US]

Journalists, essayists, economists, naturalists, screenwriters and other writers can apply for a writing residency program.

The Mesa Refuge, located in Point Reyes Station, California, provides time, space and solitude for writers to delve into their work. Topics related to nature, the human economy and social equity receive priority.

The next sessions available are Sept. 10 to Oct. 1, Oct. 2 to 15, Oct. 16 to 29, Oct. 30 to 12.

Room and most dinners are provided at no cost, but participants must pay for their own travel.

The deadline is June. 1. There is a US$50 application fee.

International AIDS Society offers scholarships for HIV/AIDS conference [Worldwide]

Journalists reporting on HIV from any country can apply for a fellowship to attend this conference.

The International AIDS Society (IAS) is organizing the fourth HIV Research for Prevention Conference (HIVR4P 2020)  Oct. 11 to 15 in Cape Town, South Africa.

The conference will enable 25 journalists from around the world to cover the event. Fellows report on biomedical HIV prevention and produce media coverage of advances and challenges in prevention research, especially in communities that are heavily impacted by the epidemic.

The ideal candidates have previous experience covering HIV and HIV prevention, in addition to strong English skills. Staff and freelance journalists can apply.

Fellows will receive conference registration, airfare, accommodation, some meals and a small per diem.

SANEF seeks nominations for media Integrity Award [South Africa]

Print and online journalism professionals, publishers and owners can be nominated for an award.

The South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) is calling for nominations for the 2020 Nat Nakasa Award for Media Integrity.

Nominees must have demonstrated integrity and reported fearlessly; displayed a commitment to serve the people of South Africa; tenaciously striven to maintain a publication or other medium despite insurmountable obstacles; resisted any censorship; and/or shown courage in making information available to the South African public.

This year, SANEF has launched a new community media award to celebrate courageous journalism in the community media sector.

The winners are usually recognized at a gala dinner in June.

Journalism Grants focuses on National Geography [Worldwide]

Project leaders in the areas of conservation, education, research, storytelling and technology can apply for a grant.

National Geographic is accepting proposals for its Exploration Grant and Early Career Grants.

Possible works may include photography, filmmaking, cartography, journalism or digital media and cover one of the three National Geographic lenses: wildlife, changing planet or human journey.

Projects selected for the Exploration Grant receive between US$10,000 and US$30,000.

Early Career Grants are open to applicants with less than five years of experience and range from $$5,000 to US$10,000.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate successful completion of similar projects with measurable and/or tangible results.
