The Centro de Formación en Periodismo Digital at the University of Guadalajara will offer an online course on journalism creativity and brief nonfiction Feb. 3 to March 15, 2020.

Instructor Óscar Tagle will teach participants to apply synthesis, mental agility and different literary resources to write short journalistic texts.

Registration costs MXN1,800 for Mexican residents and US$90 for those living outside Mexico.

The deadline to register is Jan. 12, 2020.

Journalist in residence Scholarship available [Worldwide]

Science journalists can apply for this program.

The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) offers its Journalist in Residence program in Potsdam, Germany.

The fellow spends up to two months engaging with scientists and becoming familiar with the institute’s research. He or she is also expected to present a seminar on science communication.

The organizer provides EUR3,500/month and help defray travel expenses if necessary.

Candidates must have excellent knowledge of written and spoken English; knowledge of German is welcome but not required.

The deadline is Nov. 29.

Film Festival seeks entries [Brazil]

Independent documentarians are invited to submit their films on issues surrounding the exploration and uses of nuclear material.

The International Uranium Film Festival, a traveling festival devoted to nuclear energy, will be held May 21 to May 31, 2020 in Rio de Janeiro and Oct. 15 to 18 in Berlin. The festival is organized by Yellow Archives.

The competition is accepting submissions of feature-length and short-length films in all genres. Films don't have to be new productions.

Winners will receive a trophy.

The deadline is Jan. 1, 2020.

Local Newsroom Revenue Project open [US]

Local news organizations facing financial difficulties can apply for this program.

The Solutions Journalism Network (SJN), with support from the Google News Initiative, has launched the Local Newsroom Revenue Project.

Selected newsrooms will receive small grants, training and coaching to support solutions journalism projects and business experiments.

Candidates must serve people from at least one of the following categories: rural areas, news deserts, communities struggling to access news; African American, Latino/a/x, Native American or immigrant communities; or socio-economically deprived urban area.

Human rights program open for journalists [Worldwide]

Journalists and others from low-income countries can apply for this program at Columbia University in New York.

The Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR) is accepting applications for the Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP). It will begin in late August and run until mid-December 2020.

The program leverages the resources of Columbia University and international organizations such as Human Rights Watch and WITNESS to provide proven grassroots leaders with skill-building and networking opportunities.

Through workshops, seminars, Columbia University classes and meetings with policymakers and potential funders, participants will share their experiences, reflect critically on their strategies, and plan future campaigns.

HRAP is designed for lawyers, journalists, doctors, teachers, social workers, community organizers and other human rights activists. Advocates must provide proof of institutional endorsement from their organizations for their participation in the program and must commit to returning to that organization.

Applicants from high-income countries will not be considered except those representing marginalized communities.

ISHR aims to provide full funding to cover participants’ program costs as well as travel and housing. A stipend is also provided for basic costs.

The deadline is Dec. 16.

Journal seeks articles on health, false news [Brazil]

Academics, journalists and others can participate in the next issue of this magazine.

The Electronic Journal of Health Communication, Information and Innovation (Reciis, in Portuguese) invites work for the dossier "Fake News and Health", scheduled for March 2020.

Possible issues include different discursive practices around true and false; impacts of fake news on health sectors; communication and information challenges in tackling fake news; self-care policies in post-truth times; production of fake news in digital territories; and more.

Articles must be in Portuguese, English or Spanish, with abstracts in all three languages.

The deadline is Dec. 2.

Workshop focuses on women in journalism [US]

Women journalists and students are invited to attend this event.

The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism is organizing the Women in Journalism Workshop May 1 to 3, 2020 in Columbia, Missouri.

This annual workshop focuses on challenges, accomplishments and issues specific to women in the journalism industry today.

Sessions include self-care, HEAT training, how to prepare for violent breaking news, machine learning & AI for journalism, secondary trauma, advocating for yourself, innovating in the newsroom, implicit bias training and more.

The cost is US$50 for students and US$75 for professionals. There is a limited number of travel scholarships and student registration scholarships.

Journalism training program open [Worldwide]

Aspiring reporters and recent graduates can participate in this nine-month program.

Thomson Reuters is accepting candidates for its Journalism Training Program.

The program begins in September 2020, featuring on-the-job journalism training, initially for one month in London, followed by a placement in a major bureau in China, Singapore, United Kingdom, Mexico, South Africa, Egypt, Lebanon or United Arab Emirates.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to a career in journalism, as well as fluency in written English. Fluency in a second language is beneficial but not compulsory.

Poynter organizes leadership academy for women [US]

Women who work in the digital space with leadership responsibilities or have demonstrated leadership potential can apply for this training program.

The Poynter Institute is accepting applications for the 2020 Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media.

A total of 30 promising women leaders will be selected for one of three academies, to be held Feb. 23 to 28,  April 19 to 24 and Oct. 4 to 9 at Poynter’s campus in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The seminar aims to help women gain and polish the skills and knowledge needed to rise to the highest levels of media leadership. Sessions will cover how to develop effective management styles, handle difficult conversations, including #MeToo situations, build better work-life chemistry, plan your career and more.

The tuition costs US$1,095, including lunches, snacks and some dinners. A limited number of need-based travel and tuition scholarships is available.

NORAD program offers free training on illicit finance reporting [Africa]

Journalists who are fluent in English and have at least two years of experience can apply for the Wealth of Nations - Illicit finance (NORAD) program.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation, in partnership with the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism, is looking for journalists based anywhere in Africa to take part in a long-term scheme that will develop their ability to report on illicit financial flows.

Selected journalists will participate in intensive training covering illicit finance, reporting on companies, accounts and budgets and investigative techniques. The program will take place Feb. 3 to 7, 2020 in Cape Town.

Participants will propose one or more story ideas and receive modest funding to realize their stories. The organization also covers air travel expenses, accommodation, local transfers and meals relating to the training.

The deadline is Nov. 26.
