Grants for film projects open [MENA, Germany]

Young filmmakers, students and recent graduates from film and media academies in Germany and the Arab world can enter this contest.

The Robert Bosch Foundation grants film prizes for international cooperation between young German and Arab filmmakers to realize a joint film project.

The prizes, each worth up to EUR60,000 (US$66,905), are awarded for a short animation, short fiction film and short or feature-length documentary.

The contest is open to mixed teams of German and Arab filmmakers. Films should focus on an aspect of intercultural exchange.

To facilitate the team-finding process, Arab directors will be invited to the Project Market Amman to meet German producers. The Robert Bosch Foundation will cover travel, accommodation and meals for participants.

The deadline is July 31.

Reporting fellowship for women available [Worldwide]

Women-identifying journalists with at least three years of experience can apply for a reporting fellowship.

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF), in partnership with Malaria No More, is organizing a reporting trip Sept. 16 to 27 to Rwanda.

The trip will focus on efforts to end malaria, the impact of U.S. investments on Rwandan women and girls, and the role that women are playing in leading the fight against malaria.

The fellowship will cover travel, lodging, meals and fixers/interpreters unless the selected journalist’s news organization wishes to assume these costs.

Budding journalists can apply for a yearlong fellowship in New York.

ProPublica is offering the Lorana Sullivan Senior Business Reporting Fellowship.

Fellows will focus on enterprising, hard-hitting stories on corporate power, from corporate malfeasance to consumer flimflams to employment discrimination to financial skulduggery.

The fellowships pay US$900 per week and include full benefits.

Media firm seeks journalists [Worldwide]

Journalists fluent in English can apply for these positions.

The Correspondent, scheduled to launch Sept. 30, is hiring a team of journalists to provide independent, inclusive and ad-free journalism.

Available positions include full-time correspondents and freelance correspondents based anywhere in the world, in addition to an editorial designer, a conversation editor and an engagement editor based in Amsterdam.

The Correspondent is led by Rob Wijnberg, who also founded De Correspondent, a Dutch news website that raised US$1.7 million through crowdfunding.

Katherine Schneider Journalism Award seeks reports on disability issues [US]

Journalists from print, broadcast and online outlets can submit their stories.

The
Katherine Schneider Journalism Award for Excellence in Reporting on Disability is the national journalism contest devoted exclusively to disability coverage. It is administered by the National Center on Disability and Journalism, headquartered at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.

The contest features the Large Media Market Awards and the Small Media Market Awards. Winners receive US$5,000 for first place, US$1,500 for second place and US$500 for third place.

Entries must have been published or aired between July 1, 2018 and July 31, 2019. Works from outside the United States are accepted but must be in English. Special consideration will be given to entries that are accessible to those with disabilities.

The deadline is Aug. 5.

DW offers internship program [Lusophone countries]

Journalists and students can apply for an internship in Bonn, Germany.

Deutsche Welle (DW) offers two internship programs in its Portuguese for Africa newsroom: one for journalists with professional experience and the other for university students from the European Union.

The internship for professional journalists does not require EU citizenship. Candidates must be fluent in Portuguese and have basic English or German skills and professional experience in journalism, including broadcasting.

The internship for college students requires a valid visa to study in Germany or citizenship from one of the countries of the European Union. In addition to speaking Portuguese, candidates must have good English or German skills and basic journalism experience.

Internships last two to three months.

Trainees receive a monthly stipend but must cover their travel costs.

The deadline is June 30.

Refuge Scholarship for journalists available [Worldwide]

Journalists from countries in crisis or war can apply to stay in Berlin for up to three months.

Reporters Without Borders Germany, in cooperation with taz Panter Foundation, will host one journalist September to November 2019, another one March to May 2020 and a third one April to June 2020.

The Rest and Refuge Scholarship will cover travel expenses, an apartment, pocket money and transportation in Berlin.

Participants must be able to communicate in basic English or German. They must have the intention to return to their country after the fellowship.

The deadline to apply is June 16.

National Press Foundation hosts workshop on science communication [Europe, US]

Journalists interested in learning better ways to communicate science to the public can apply.

The National Press Foundation (NPF), with support from Fondation Ipsen, is organizing the workshop "Paris accords of science communication" on Oct. 21 to 24 in Paris.

The program will cover issues such as the neuroscience of hate, the science of pain, social determinants of health, childhood trauma, the plight of refugees and victims of human trafficking, and more.

Participants will receive travel, lodging and most meals.

The deadline is July 10.
