Barents Ecology accepting documentary film entries [Worldwide]

Films that focus on environmental issues can be submitted to this contest.

The Barents Ecology Film Festival, organized by the International Youth Club Solveig, will take place May 1 to 5, 2019 in Petrozavodsk, Russia.

The festival is accepting feature and documentary films (50 minutes and longer), short feature and documentary films, animations and VR on ecological subjects produced in 2017 and 2018.

Dart awards accepting reports on Trauma, Violence [North America]

Journalists covering trauma and violence for North American outlets are eligible for an award.

The Dart Awards for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma will recognize journalism about the impact of violence, crime, disaster and other traumatic events on individuals, families and communities.

Entries may include breaking news, enterprise reporting, single stories, packages of coverage on a single event, cohesive series, local, regional or national television coverage, long-form documentary and online multimedia packages.

Awards are team prizes honoring all elements involved with reporting a story. Two teams will receive US$5,000 each. Entries must have been published, aired or broadcast in 2018.

The deadline to apply is Jan. 30, 2019. There is a US$50 entry fee.

IAS offers scholarships for HIV conference [Worldwide]

Journalists interested in HIV issues can apply for a scholarship to attend this conference.

The International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Science will take place June 21 to 24, 2019 in Mexico City. 

The IAS/AVAC Media Scholarship Program will fund qualified journalists who would not otherwise be able to attend and report on the conference.

The program also provides training on HIV research, a series of briefings through the conference week and tailored support to help journalists strengthen their HIV reporting skills.

Priority will be given to journalists representing media outlets or wire services with a wide regional or national reach, with a proven history of covering HIV and/or AIDS and/or infectious diseases, and based in South East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean or Sub-Saharan Africa.

Statement on shooting of journalists at Lagos APC rally

IPC condemns shooting of journalists at APC Lagos Rally

The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria is highly concerned about the reported gun-attack on journalists who were covering the Lagos State rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos on Tuesday, January 8, 2019.

According to news reports, among those that were affected by the unwelcome activities of gun wielding elements were the group political editor of The Nation Newspaper, Emmanuel Oladesu, News Telegraph correspondent, Temitope Ogunbanke and Ibile Television cameraman, Abiodun Yusuf.

The News Editor of The Nation confirmed the incident to IPC stating that Mr. Oladesu was hit by a stray bullet and was receiving treatment in a hospital although in stable condition.

IPC hereby reminds all political parties that the Nigerian Media Code of Election Coverage obligates them to ensure the safety of journalists covering their activities including campaigns.

IPC therefore calls on the Lagos APC to urgently take appropriate steps to apprehend the alleged perpetrators of the bizarre attack with a view to handing them over to the law enforcement agencies for immediate prosecution, also as provided by the Code of Election Coverage. 

IPC calls on  all journalists covering the on going campaigns to keep themselves abreast of all safety measure. They should learn to stay away from political activities where rival gangs engage in show of force especially through display of weapons.

Journalists covering the elections should also bear in mind that they constitute dangerous assignments requiring them to take insurance cover especially from their employees.

IPC appeals to the security agents on electoral duty, especially the Police, to consider the protection of journalists as part of their responsibility as envisaged by and indeed provided for by the Nigerian Media Code of Election Coverage.

IPC Nigeria condemns military onslaught on Daily Trust Newspapers

The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria, condemns in strong terms, the forceful closure of Daily Trust Newspapers' head office in Abuja and the organisation's Maiduguri office by military personnel on Sunday January 6, 2019.

A senior editorial staff of the organisation confirmed the military onslaught on the media establishment stating that staff had been ordered out of the premises, laptops and computers seized and operations halted. No reason, he said, was given for the action.

IPC considers this development as a fresh threat to freedom of the press as well as the freedom and individual liberties of journalists and other media professionals working in Daily Trust.

The action of the military is also a threat to democracy with the presidential elections, less than two months away.

The military is bound by the laws of the land and cannot in any circumstance be allowed to resort to extra judicial measures no matter its grievances.

Journalists who covered investments and businesses that aim to produce a social or environmental impact can compete for a prize.

The Impact Journalist Award, organized by Ponte a Ponte and Faculdade Cásper Líber, recognizes journalists across Brazil in four categories.

The categories are text (print or online newspapers and magazines), audiovisual (multimedia vehicles, radio or TV), innovative journalism initiatives in the field of investment and business impact, and journalism initiatives in peripheral contexts and community initiatives in the field of investment and business impact.

Works must have been published or broadcast between Jan. 1, 2018 and Jan. 31, 2019.

The winner of each category will receive BRL3,500, in addition to media exposure and access to an online course on the history of social impact in Brazil.

The deadline is Jan. 31, 2019.

TV channel M-Net is selecting candidates for its Magic in Motion Academy class of 2019.

The yearlong program provides an immersive experience in key areas of TV and film creation, across different genres. This includes production commissioning, scriptwriting, concept creation, producing, directing, cinematography, sound, art direction, editing, post-production and broadcasting.

Reportagen Magazine seeks entries in 12 languages [Worldwide]

Journalists anywhere can enter in this international contest.

Reportagen Magazine, with the support of Bern Welcome, organizes the True Story Award, a journalism prize that aims to make reporters’ voices known beyond the borders of their home countries and to increase the diversity of perspectives offered by the media.

Works can be submitted in 12 languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Persian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Works written in other languages must be translated into English and submitted in the categories "Europe" or "World."

Texts of 3,000 to 17,000 words published in print or online between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2018 are eligible.

A jury consisting of 50 members from 29 countries will select the best 42 texts, whose authors will travel to Bern, Switzerland, for the award ceremony. Three winners will receive CHF30,000 (US$29,986), CHF20,000 (US$19,991) and CHF10,000 (US$9,995) each.

Journalism fellowships available at Oxford University [Worldwide]

Midcareer journalists can apply for a fellowship at Oxford University, United Kingdom.

The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism seeks applicants for its Journalist Fellowship program, which will begin October 2019 or January 2020 and last one to three terms.

The program gives visiting journalists from around the world an opportunity to critically reflect upon their profession, to research a subject of their choice under the supervision of an academic specializing in that area, and to enjoy the breadth of academic, cultural and social life at the University of Oxford.

Applicants must have at least five years of journalism experience and strong English skills.

Most Journalist Fellowships are fully-funded and cover living costs and accommodation.

The deadline is Feb. 11, 2019.
