InfoCongo offers journalism grants [Africa]

Journalists, designers, developers, cartographers and data experts can apply for funding.

InfoCongo, the geojournalism platform of Internews' Earth Journalism Network in Central Africa, seeks proposals for its Stories, Maps and Data Visualization Grants. 

Possible topics include illegal exploitation and trade in wildlife and forest resources in the Congo Basin; the cost of human conflicts on forest and conservation; climate change and forest-related stories; the social and environmental costs and benefits of specific national and regional development; and more.

Independent and staff journalists from all types of media outlets — both large and small — are encouraged to submit applications. Applicants should be based in a Congo Basin country and/or demonstrate that the impact of the story on their audience will positively influence development in the Congo region.

Grants should not exceed US$1,500 per proposal and may cover travel, research, translation and database access.

The deadline to submit a proposal is May 20.

Open Society offers media grants [West Africa]

Local organizations based in West Africa can apply for funding.

The Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) is accepting proposals to support initiatives in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tome and Príncipe and Togo.

Possible target areas include journalism, justice reform and the rule of law, the democratic practice and more. Proposals must promote investigative journalism and free, quality and independent media.

The amount of funding varies. In the event that OSIWA cannot fund the entire project budget, it may choose to fund part of it and request the grant seeker to source for the outstanding balance.

Society for Features Journalism offers conference fellowship [US]

Journalists of color can apply for a conference fellowship.

The Society for Features Journalism is sponsoring the Penny Bender Fuchs Diversity Fellowship Program to enable journalists to attend its annual conference, which will take place Sept. 27 to 30 in Kansas City.

The conference will present a heavy emphasis on storytelling and leadership. Diversity Fellows will learn what’s happening in features departments nationwide while networking with outstanding journalists specializing in lifestyle and entertainment coverage.

Fellows will receive conference registration, airfare, transportation and hotel.

Journalism internship fund available [South Asia, US, Canada]

Undergraduate and graduate students of South Asian descent can apply for this program.

The South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) is offering internship assistance to help students pursue their education and future careers in journalism.

Students from across the United States, Canada and South Asia can apply for the awards. But applicants must be pursuing their education in a North American educational institution. Recipients are expected to give back to SAJA by volunteering at the annual convention or at other events during the year.

Applicants must be either of South Asian origin or demonstrate a strong interest in covering South Asia and/or the diaspora.

SAJA will award up to US$4,000 to two students, each receiving a minimum of US$2,000.

Getty Images offers grants for editorial photography [Worldwide]

Photojournalists looking to pursue projects of personal and journalistic significance can apply for a grant.

The Grants for Editorial Photography, sponsored by Getty Images, support compelling social, political and cultural stories.

A total of five grants of US$10,000 will be provided. The funds can be used to cover a wide variety of expenses, including travel, equipment and related expenses.

Applicants must submit a 500-word summary of the project proposal, a short bio and 20 to 25 images. The application must be in English.

New Dimensions Workshop focuses on virtual reality [Africa]

Filmmakers and artists can apply to attend this workshop on virtual reality.

Electric South, with support from the Ford Foundation and the Bertha Foundation, will host the New Dimensions Workshop July 24 to 28 in Cape Town, South Africa. 

Applicants must submit ideas for nonfiction VR projects including 360° film, animation, interactive, hybrid and more. The workshop will cover the idea development as well as practical instruction in 360° filmmaking and interactive VR.

Participants will receive flights, local transportation, accommodation, meals, visa costs and per diems.

Pulitzer Center offers travel grants for journalists [Worldwide]

Journalists worldwide can apply for a travel grant to cover issues unreported or under reported in the mainstream American and European media.

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is accepting project proposals from journalists, writers, photographers, radio producers, filmmakers or freelancers of any nationality.

The program funds international travel costs associated with reporting projects on topics and regions of global importance.

The amount of individual travel grants will depend on the specific project and detailed budget planning. Most awards fall in the range of US$5,000 to US$15,000.
