Journalists, visual content creators, researchers and media activists can apply for these grants.

Dekabristen eV's Metamedia Lab announces a microgrants program for local media projects in Russian regions.

Grants can be used to cover any costs associated with projects. Possible projects include launching a new channel, creating documentaries, multimedia projects, organizing seminars and public discussions for local audiences, etc.

A total of 30 projects will be chosen with each grant amounting up to RUB300,000.

The deadline for the second round is June 30.

Africa 21 offers fellowships for climate change conference [Africa]

Professional journalists from English-speaking countries in Africa can apply to attend this event.

Africa 21 and partners organize Media and Journalism Days in Africa on Oct. 12 to 16 in Geneva.

The event aims to convene African journalists and experts from Geneva and around the world to review, exchange and debate on a selected theme related to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This edition will focus on climate change.

The organizers will cover travel, hotel and subsistence costs for the selected participants.

Applicants must have at least five years of experience. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Native American Journalists Association hosts contest [US, Canada]

Journalists who cover Native American stories can compete for an award.

The Native American Journalists Association (NAJA) is accepting entries for its 2020 National Native Media Awards. The competition recognizes excellence in the reporting, presentation and coverage of stories in Indian Country.

Contestants must be NAJA members. Categories are divided by membership type: professional, associate or student. 

Works must have been published, broadcasted or posted in 2019.

Winners will be recognized at the Media Awards Banquet at the National Native Media Conference Sept. 13 to 16 in Phoenix, Arizona. The winners of the Richard LaCourse Award and the Medill Milestone Achievement Award will receive US$5,000 each.

The deadline is May has been extended to 31. The cost is US$25 per entry for professionals and US$10 for students.

Global Migration Film Festival seeks entries [Worldwide]

Professional and emerging filmmakers are invited to submit a film to this festival.

The UN Migration Agency (IOM) will host the Global Migration Film Festival Nov. 28 to Dec. 18 in several countries around the world.

The festival seeks films that capture the promise and challenges of migration for those who leave their homes in search of a better life and the contributions migrants make to their new communities.

Films must have been completed on or after Jan. 1, 2017 and include subtitles in English. Features must be over 41 minutes long and shorts must be between 15 and 40 minutes long.

Features and short films will receive cash prizes to be announced.

One Minute Festival accepting entries [Brazil]

Anyone can enter this contest.

The One Minute Festival, with the support of Brazil's Ministry of Culture, is accepting entries.

Videos should be 1 minute long on any theme and can be made with a professional or mobile camera. Gifs will also be accepted. 

The best videos selected by the curators of the Festival will receive a trophy.

Workshops on social media journalism available [Southeast Asia]

Young journalists, activists, students and recent graduates from Southeast Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand can apply for online workshops and production support. 

Goethe-Institut is organizing the program "Vibrant Minds," which covers contemporary social media journalism with a focus on underrepresented perspectives and discourses.

The program will run from late June 2020 to January 2021. Participants will be able to establish partnerships with colleagues from Southeast Asian countries, study advanced online tools, provide content on a selected platform and more.  

Applicants will be selected on the basis of the following criteria: creative approach to the subject, technical implementation, first experiences with social media and proficiency in English.

The deadline is June 1.

FNF Award focuses on conflict reporting [MENA]

Journalists and organizations across the Arab world can be nominated for an award in Germany.

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), a German foundation for liberal politics, seeks applications for this year’s Raif Badawi Award for courageous journalists.

The purpose of the award is to honor journalists and media organizations from predominantly Muslim countries and to call attention to the human rights violations in this field.

Nominations can be in English or German and must include links to relevant articles or publications in the original language.

The deadline is June 15.

Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), with sponsorship of the Inasmuch Foundation, is hosting webinars on COVID-19 and journalism.

The webinars cover topics such as how to manage a remote team, how to best prepare for summer and beyond with or without an internship amid COVID-19, covering populations vulnerable to COVID-19, covering job losses and economic, fact-checking coronavirus stories, finding COVID-19 data and more.

Google News Initiative seeks projects on digital innovation [North America]

News organizations of any size whose projects focus on encouraging a more sustainable news ecosystem can apply for funding.

The Google News Initiative organizes the GNI Innovation Challenge in North America, which will support projects that drive digital innovation and develop new business models, generating revenue and/or increasing audience engagement for local journalism.

Google will fund selected projects up to US$300,000 and will finance up to 70% of the total project cost.

All innovative ideas are welcome, and projects can be experimental but must have well-defined goals and measurable impact. Special consideration will be given to collaborative projects involving multiple news organizations.

Successful projects will also need to be delivered within one year.

The deadline is Aug. 12.

ONA Award highlights coverage of digital issues [Worldwide]

Online journalists, digital news organizations and students worldwide can apply for an award.

The Online News Association (ONA) is accepting entries for the 2020 Online Journalism Awards recognizing excellence in digital reporting.

Award categories include data journalism, visual digital storytelling, investigative journalism, public service, technical innovation, general excellence and more. This year features two new categories: climate change reporting and excellence in newsletters.

The contest offers five awards totaling US$31,000, courtesy of the Knight Foundation, the Gannett Foundation, Agora Journalism Center and the University of Florida.

Awards will be given at the Online News Association Conference & Awards Banquet Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 in Atlanta. The OJAs, launched in 2000, are a comprehensive set of journalism prizes honoring excellence in digital journalism. You can view a list of the 2019 winners here. 

Entries must have published between June 1, 2019 and May 31, 2020.  Although English translations are strongly recommended, works may be submitted in any language. 

The deadline is June 4. The entry fee is US$100 for ONA members, US$175 for non-members, US$15 for student members and US$50 for student non-members.
