Online courses for media professionals available [Central Asia]

Journalists, screenwriters, blogger and other media professionals from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan can apply for funding.

The IREX's program Central Asia Design Hub (CADH) will cover the cost of subscriptions to existing online courses on production of media content – up to 30 applications will receive funding for a total amount of US$20,000.

Course topics include: creation of digital media; news audio and video program production; screenwriting; filmmaking; animation; design; photo editing; audio editing; and social media marketing.

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until April 2021.

Third Coast/Richard H. Driehaus Foundation seek audio documentaries, stories [Worldwide]

Audio stories, including podcasts and radio features, are eligible for a prize.

The Third Coast/Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition will honor the best audio work worldwide.

The categories are documentary (gold, silver, bronze), serialized story, (new) documentary: short, new artist, documentary: non-english language, impact, (new) audio unbound, director’s choice and news feature.

Works must have been produced between April 7, 2018 and May 25, 2020, except in the audio unbound category, which accepts works from April 7, 2016. Entries in non-English languages will be considered for other categories but must include translations.

The winners receive up to US$5,000.

The deadline is May 25. The application fee costs US$15 to US$225.

Culture Resource has launched its program “Wijhat” (Destinations), which offers grants of up to US$8,000.

The grants are intended to support the travel to festivals and training events within the Arab region and internationally, allowing grantees to present their works to diverse audiences, to exchange knowledge and expertise with peers and to build their professional capacities.

The program covers ticket and visa costs, accommodation and partial support for living expenses.

Poynter, with support from CNN, will host "Virtual TV power reporting" Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 2 to 25.

Participants will learn how to effectively tell complicated visual and non-visual stories for TV; techniques to gather information from interviewees even when they are reluctant to talk; conduct ethical decision-making on a deadline; demonstrate principles of photojournalism in their work and communicate and collaborate with photojournalists; and produce powerful  stories that engage audiences.

The cost is US$99. Members of minority organizations in the U.S. are eligible for scholarships to cover 50%. Journalists in financial need can also request a discount.

Journalists and organizations in the United States that published stories on First Amendment issues are eligible for a US$10,000 award.

The Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award, presented by the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, honors journalists, organizations and others that protect and preserve one or more of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Work must have been completed within the 2019 calendar year. Last year's winner was the Boston Globe's Spotlight Team.

Along with the cash prize, the winner will receive airfare and accommodation to attend the Society of Professional Journalists National Convention.
