The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford is looking for a senior research fellow for its Trust in News Project.

The fellow will help develop and lead the institute's comparative research on the drivers of trust in news and identify actionable, evidence-based recommendations. 

Candidates must have completed a doctorate program in a substantive area of political or other social science including journalism/media studies or data science, in addition to significant post-qualification research experience.

The annual salary is GBP48,114 to GBP55,750, with a discretionary range to GBP60,905.

SBPJ focuses on journalism research Award [Brazil]

Journalism students and researchers can submit their work to this contest.

The Brazilian Association of Journalism Researchers (SBPJ or, in Portuguese) organizes the Adelmo Genro Filho Journalism Research Award (PAGF) to honor those who have contributed significantly to consolidate journalism as a field of scientific knowledge in Brazil.

The contest has four categories: undergraduate term paper, master's thesis, Ph.D.dissertation and applied research (best product/project that is useful to the daily practice of journalism).

Works must have been completed in 2019. The winners will be recognized during SBPJor's national meeting in November.

Merck Foundation seeks stories that raise awareness of COVID-19 [Africa]

Journalists from African countries where French, English, Arabic or Portuguese are spoken can enter this competition.

Merck Foundation is hosting the "Stay at Home" Media Recognition Award. The contest aims to encourage the media to raise awareness about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stories must focus on the new coronavirus, particularly on how to stay safe and keep physically and mentally healthy during lockdown measures and social distancing.

The categories are TV, print, radio and online. The winner in each category will receive US$500.

The competition will also expand to Asia and the Middle East.

The deadline is June 30.

Photo grant seeks entries [Worldwide]

Photographers ages 18 to 25 can apply for this new grant.

The California's Academy of Sciences' Big Picture Natural World Photography Competition has created the Emerging Photographer Grant.

The grant aims to encourage young photographers to focus on conservation, biodiversity and sustainability of the natural world.

Two photographers will each receive U$2,500 grants and mentorship. Their resulting work may be displayed at the Academy in the 2021 BigPicture Natural World Photography Exhibit.

Registration ongoing for webinar series on 2020 census reporting [US]

Journalists planning to cover the 2020 U.S. Census are invited to attend these webinars.

Poynter is offering the webinar series "Uncovering stories from the 2020 Census" at 3 p.m. EDT on May 5, 12, 19 and 26.

Participants will learn the history of the U.S. census and how that past may inform census-taking during our current crisis; understand adjustments being made to census collection in the wake of COVID-19 and how to report this info; how to track and synthesize census data into stories relevant to readers; and how to integrate other government records to fill in census data gaps.

The main instructor is D’Vera Cohn, senior writer/editor of the Pew Research Center. Cohn will be joined by historian Margo Anderson and former director of U.S. Census Bureau John Thompson.

Reporting Democracy seeks story proposal on Coronavirus [Europe]

Freelance and staff journalists from the Visegrad Four countries of Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, as well as the Balkan countries of Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania, North Macedonia and Greece can apply for funding.

Reporting Democracy is inviting proposals for stories that reveal how the COVID-19 crisis is reshaping politics and society in Central, Eastern and Southeast Europe.

Successful proposals will receive a grant of between EUR500 to EUR2,500.

Reporting Democracy will provide editorial support and a platform for publishing and distributing the stories.

Proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis every fortnight, with applications open until further notice. The first review will take place on May 15.

The University of Guadalajara's Centro de Formación en Periodismo Digital will offer a course on public communication strategies for crisis situations June 1 to July 5.

The course will cover strategies, procedures and general recommendations for handling and dealing with crisis situations that may arise during the communication of matters of public interest. Participants will learn to identify a communications crisis, address its causes and develop a plan to solve it.

The registration deadline is May 17. The cost is MXN3,466 (US$142).

Online course on conflict and International Humanitarian Law available [Latin America]

Journalists and other communicators who work on issues related to the peace process in Colombia, either in or outside the country, can register for this virtual training.

The International Committee of the Red Cross in Colombia, with the support of Consejo de Redacción (CdR), offers the online course "Conflict, violence and International Humanitarian Law in Colombia: tools for journalists" June 23 to July 28.

The training is aimed at those who wish to expand their knowledge about how to address information and plan coverages with a humanitarian approach in the Colombian context.

Certificates will be issued to those who comply with 70% of the activities and submit a reporting proposal at the end of the training.

Grants on COVID-19 impact available for photojournalists [Worldwide]

Photojournalists reporting stories related to the COVID-19 pandemic can apply for a grant.

Getty Images has restructured its reportage grants to support photo stories on the impact of the pandemic.

Eight grantees will each receive US$5,000. Particular consideration will be given to photojournalists working in their own cities or immediate regions. 

Applicants  must abide by local and national laws governing how journalists work and travel amid quarantine restrictions.

Economic Hardship Reporting Project accepting submissions [US]

Independent journalists who are experiencing economic hardship due to the pandemic can apply for this reporting grant. 

The Economic Hardship Reporting Project offers grants for stories on the intersection of the coronavirus and financial suffering in America.

Reporters receive roughly a dollar a word, while the day-rate for journalists is US$300 to US$500. A limited number of emergency hardship grants range between U$500 and US$1,500. 

Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis.
