IJP offers fellowship [Northern Europe]

Journalists ages 18 to 40 from Germany, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden can apply for this fellowship.

The International Journalisten-Programme (IJP) organizes the German-Northern European Journalists' Bursary.

The program will send up to 11 German and 11 Nordic journalists to work in German or Nordic newsrooms of their choice while also researching stories for their home organization.

The fellowship will begin April 2020, with a three-day introduction conference in one of the Nordic capitals or Berlin, and run until May 30, 2020.

Selected candidates will receive EUR3,800, which should cover airfares, transportation, accommodation and meals.

Gabo Foundation offers grant for new narratives on drugs [Latin America]

Journalists in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru can apply for this fund.

The Gabo Foundation, with support from the Open Society Foundations, organizes the first edition of the Fund for Investigative Journalism and New Narratives on Drugs.

The initiative will provide US$2,500 to US$8,000 to reporting projects that broaden the perspectives with which drugs are addressed in the region, and that enhances stories on public health, human rights, youth and women, the environment, and the rural context of illegal substances.

Applicants can enter in three categories: investigative journalism, local journalism and innovative journalism.

A total of 25 fellows will be selected. They will receive mentorship and guidance for six months.

LAPO bags Best Microfinance Bank of the Year Award

LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited has been adjudged the “Best Microfinance Bank of the Year” in the country. Workshop focuses on conflict, humanitarian reporting [Spain]

Journalists can register for this workshop.

The Escuela de Periodismo UAM/El País is organizing a one-day workshop on Africa reporting Nov. 26 in Madrid.

The workshop will address some of the essential aspects when reporting on areas of conflict and humanitarian crises in Africa. The stereotyped image of the continent will also be discussed.

The instructor, freelance journalist José Naranjo, will give recommendations to report positively on African issues.

The deadline is Nov. 15. The cost is EUR65.

Allard Prize seeks photo entries on human rights, anti-corruption [Worldwide]

Professional and amateur photographers who cover human rights issues or anti-corruption efforts can apply for this prize.

The Allard Prize Photography Competition recognizes photographic excellence reflecting the ideals of the Allard Prize.

Entries should focus on themes of courage and leadership in combating corruption, especially through promoting transparency, accountability and the Rule of Law, and of human rights and/or anti-corruption generally. Contestants may submit up to four images.

The Allard Prize Committee will select up to six photographs as winners. Each winning entrant will receive CAD1,000 (US$755).

IWMF offers fellowship on HEFAT [Worldwide]

Women-identifying and non-binary journalists with at least three years of experience can apply for a reporting fellowship.

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) is organizing Adelante (Moving Forward), a five-year reporting initiative that aims to amplify the voices of women journalists in Latin America and strengthen their professional development, impact and safety.

The next group of fellows will travel March 2 to 17, 2020 to the Mexico-Guatemala border. Fellows will begin their trip in Mexico City, where they will complete a Hostile Environment and First Aid Training (HEFAT) course. They will then depart for the Mexico-Guatemala border for nine days of reporting in Tapachula, Mexico, and Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, and the surrounding areas.

The IWMF pays for fellowship-related expenses including travel, lodging, meals and fixers/interpreters unless a selected journalist’s news organization wishes to assume these costs.

The deadline is Nov. 12.

The Texas Tribune is accepting applications for its summer 2020 fellowships. Fellows work full time during the summer.

Nieman Foundation hosts media innovation fellowship [Worldwide]

Journalists worldwide working for news organizations in a business, technology or leadership capacity can apply for a fellowship at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society will host at least one fellow for an academic year to carry out a research project on journalism innovation.

Candidates must propose a project relating to journalism’s digital transformation. Examples might include ideas for new revenue streams to fund journalism, the construction of new tools for reporting or research into news consumption patterns.

Fellows receive a stipend and additional allowances for housing, childcare and health insurance.

The application deadline is Dec. 1, 2019 for international journalists and Jan. 31, 2020 for U.S. journalists.

PRESS RELEASE: IPC CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION ON RECENT ATTACKS ON JOURNALISTS IN CALABAR

The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos is calling on security operatives in Calabar to immediately investigate and apprehend alleged perpetrators of recent attacks on journalists working with Akwa Ibom state Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC).

Details from Leadership Online Portal has it that, “a news editor with the Akwa Ibom state Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC), Harrison Essien was attacked by gunmen at the AKBC Transmitting Station, Ntak Inyang, few meters from Calabar-Itu highway in Uyo  yesterday, October 20, 2019.”

“It will be recalled that few weeks ago, five employees of the same Broadcasting Corporation were attacked by armed robbers in the same location, even as most of the victims are currently treating injuries sustained during the attack, the report said.”

The Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade in a statement demanded that the State Commissioner of Police should immediately probe the recent attacks and take the necessary actions while the alleged perpetrators should be made to face the consequences of their actions.

“Security agencies and vigilante groups should come to the aid of the staff of the organization by beefing up security in the area,” Arogundade added.
