The program is accepting proposals for stories related to Indigenous land and property rights from a data-driven perspective.

Awardees will receive up to CAD10,000 to pursue their investigation as well as story promotion and networking.

WSCIJ seeks entries for investigative reporting award (Nigeria)

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) invites entries from Nigerian professional journalists or team of journalists, full-time or part-time, for the 14th edition of the Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting. The centre has introduced online application option for some categories of the award for this edition.   This year, applicants for the Television, Radio and Online categories of the award can put in their entries through an online application process. The other three categories requiring hard copy submission given the nature of entry processing, are the Print, Photography and Editorial cartoon.

Received entries will be collated using the award coding system and assessed by a panel of media experts and related professionals with good understanding of investigative reporting. The judges’ board would broadly score submitted stories based on quality of investigation, evidence, human rights elements, ethical reportage, courage, individual creativity, public interest, impact and quality of presentation.

The deadline for the submission of entries is Thursday, 24 October 2019

OKP offers scholarships for journalism courses [Worldwide]

Midcareer journalists from several developing countries can apply for a scholarship to attend a short course in the Netherlands.

The Orange Knowledge Programme (OKP) is accepting applications for journalism courses at the Radio Nederland Training Centre (RNTC) and other institutions. The OKP is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and run by the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education (NUFFIC).

Candidates must be from Afghanistan, Albania, Armenia, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Colombia, Congo (DRC), Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea,  Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Liberia, North Macedonia, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestinian Territories, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Suriname, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda, Vietnam, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The fellowships are intended for the cost of living, course fees, visa, travel and insurance. If applicable, the scholarship recipient may have to cover the difference between actual costs and the scholarship amount.

The current application round is only for short courses between Feb. 23 and July 27, 2020. The deadlines vary per institution.

Fellowship for Artistic Journalism available [Worldwide]

Journalists who want to integrate creative practices with rigorous journalism can apply for this yearlong fellowship.

ArtsEverywhere, a platform for artistic experimentation, organizes a fellowship for artistic journalism to support storytelling projects.

The fellow will receive a stipend of CAD15,000 (US$11,299) and CAD5,000 (US$3,766) for travel, equipment and other project costs. Fellows will be required to participate in introductory calls in January and to attend the ArtsEverywhere Festival, Jan. 23 to 26, 2020, in Guelph, Canada.

Projects in Africa, Asia, Australia, the South Pacific, South America and the Caribbean or in under-reported parts of North America and Europe will be given preference.

The deadline is Nov. 1.

Mesa Refuge offers writing residency [US]

Journalists, essayists, economists, naturalists, screenwriters and other writers can apply for a writing residency program.

The Mesa Refuge, located in Point Reyes Station, California, provides time, space and solitude for writers to delve into their work. Topics related to nature, the human economy and social equity receive priority.

The next sessions available are March 20 to April 2, April 3 to 16,  April 17 to 30 and May 8 to 21, 2020.

Room and most dinners are provided at no cost, but participants must pay for their own travel.

The deadline is Dec. 1. There is a US$50 application fee.

Wamda Capital offers grants for entrepreneurs [MENA]

Journalists, media innovators and entrepreneurs can apply for this fellowship in Dubai.

Wamda Capital, a venture capital firm, is accepting applications for its fellowship program Wamda X, which aims to invest in promising entrepreneurs in the MENA region.

The program will run for four months and take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Winners will receive US$16,000 to US$30,000 as well as training, mentorship, coaching, media exposure and networking opportunities.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Columbia University offers scholarships [Worldwide]

Emerging leaders from around the world who have made meaningful contributions to their field can apply for this program in New York.

Columbia University is accepting candidates for the 2020-2021 Obama Foundation Scholars Program.

Scholars will spend the academic year, August to May, in an immersive program that brings together academic, skills-based and experiential learning, designed by Columbia University in consultation with the Obama Foundation.

The program offers airfare, a monthly stipend, a furnished studio apartment, tuition and fees for up to four courses at Columbia University and medical, dental and life insurance.

The deadline is Dec. 13.

The International Labour Organization seeks entries on migration [Worldwide]

Professional journalists and students are invited to submit articles or videos/multimedia to this contest.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is accepting entries for its 2019 global media competition.

The contest aims to promote quality reporting on labor migration issues, ensuring greater public awareness about the contributions migrant workers bring to communities and contributing to the elimination of public misperception, xenophobia and discrimination against migrant workers.

Written press, photo essay, multimedia, video and/or radio are eligible but must have been published or aired between Nov. 1, 2018 and Oct. 31, 2019. Entries in other languages than English, French and Spanish must include a translation.

The competition has a student category and four professional categories, including two prizes on the theme "fair recruitment of migrant workers" and two for "the future of labor migration."

The winners will be able to choose between US$1,000 in the professional category and US$300 for the student category or a paid fellowship to participate in an ITC-Turin course on a fair recruitment or labor migration topic in 2020.

The deadline is Oct. 31.
