Alserkal Residency program open [Arab States of the Gulf, South Asia]

Writers, curators, researchers and artists who are citizens of or residents in the Arab States of the Gulf and South Asia can apply for this program.

The Alserkal Residency is a platform for artistic experimentation and discursive exchange, seeking to support cultural producers as they research themes pertinent to their respective practices.

The program will take place May 1 to June 30, 2019 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The organizers will cover travel and accommodation, in addition to a monthly living stipend.

Residency program available [Worldwide]

International scholars from all disciplines are invited to apply for a residency program in 2019 and early 2020 in Italy.

The Bellagio Residency Program, sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, offers participants the opportunity to establish new connections and solve complex global issues. The program hosts residencies for scholars, creative artists and practitioners, but the sponsored competition is open only to scholars.

The Rockefeller Foundation seeks applicants with projects on issues that have a direct impact on the lives of poor and vulnerable populations around the world, including health, economic opportunity, urban resilience, food and agriculture, clean energy, the field of philanthropy, and innovation for development.

Residencies typically last four weeks, but applicants may request a shorter period.

Room and board are provided to all residents and their spouses/partners. Airfare is not included in the residency program; however, the foundation does have a limited travel assistance program based on the income of invited residents.

IPC TASKS JOURNALISTS ON USE OF CODE OF ELECTION COVERAGE AS 2019 CAMPAIGNS KICK OFF( NIGERIA)

As political parties and candidates officially commence campaigns for the 2019 general elections, The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria has tasked journalists covering the electoral process to professionally report the campaigns within the context of the provisions of the Nigerian Media Code of Election Coverage.

In a statement by the organisation's Director, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, IPC noted that, “The Nigerian Media Code of Election Coverage, Revised Edition 2018, which was endorsed by over a hundred media professional groups and associations; broadcast, print and online media outlets; media support/development groups; and journalism training institutions, provides detailed guidelines for the professional coverage and reporting of the elections".

Mr. Arogundade said the guidelines stipulate that journalists should give equitable access to parties and candidates, reflect the views of underrepresented groups like women, people living with disabilities and youths, and refrain from publishing or airing, stories, headlines, images and adverts that constitute hate speech and could incite violence. 

“The media as the key purveyor of information on the electoral processes should therefore ensure best professional practices by acting in accordance with the provisions and guidelines of the code, Arogundade said"".

He further said, “Media organisations and regulatory bodies are reminded of their obligation to use internal mechanisms during the campaign and electoral processes to regularly monitor implementation and compliance with the Nigerian Media Code of Election Coverage".

The IPC Director also said journalists should strive to comply with other frameworks governing media coverage of elections such as the Electoral Act 2010 as amended and the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

Mr. Arogundade equally reminded the government, the Political Parties and INEC of their obligations under the Media Code of Election Coverage to facilitate the enabling environment for effective media coverage by proactively providing electoral information and ensuring the safety of journalists.

CGAP Photo Contest accepting entries [Africa]

Photographers and videomakers are invited to depict the impact of micro-financing and financial inclusion for poor people in Africa.

The 2018 CGAP Photo Contest is accepting entries. The contest is organized by the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP), a global partnership of 34 leading organizations that seek to advance financial inclusion.

Suggested topics include digital fin
ance, smallholder farmers and their families, women's use of financial services and small business enterprises.

Prizes vary from US$250 to US$2,000 in gift certificates for photo or video equipment and acessories.

Blog4Dev contest accepting entries [Sub-Saharan Africa]

Anyone age 18 to 28 can enter the #Blog4Dev contest.

The World Bank is inviting residents of Sub-Saharan Africa to write a blog post on what it will take to enhance the skills needed to prepare Africa’s youth for the digital economy and the future of work.

Entries must be in English, French or Portuguese and have no more than 500 words.

Prizes include a chance to intern at a World Bank Africa country office and an opportunity to have their blog published on the World Bank Africa blog Nasikiliza.

The Aftermath Project offers photography grants [Worldwide]

Photographers who work in conflict situations can apply for a grant.

The Aftermath Project is offering a US$25,000 grant for photographers who tell the other half of the story of conflict — the story of what it takes for individuals to learn to live again, to rebuild destroyed lives and homes, to restore civil societies and to address the lingering wounds of war while struggling to create new avenues for peace.

Proposals may relate to the aftermath of numerous kinds of conflict. Examples include violence between rural ethnic groups, an urban riot in an industrialized country, a rebel insurgency or full-scale war. There is no specific time frame that defines “aftermath,” although the project generally seeks to support stories that are no longer being covered by the mainstream media or which have been ignored by the media.

Entries should include an explanation of the specific aftermath issues related to the project being proposed, as well as an overview of the applicant’s plans for covering the story during the course of the grant year.

Youtube offers learning fund [Worldwide]

YouTubers can apply for funding. 

The YouTube Learning Fund will support creators of multi-session learning content around the world.

Applicants must manage at least one YouTube channel with a minimum of 25,000 subscribers; demonstrate a strategy to develop multi-session content;
depict the intent to teach in a factual, informative and trustworthy manner, indicating expertise and/or a scrupulous approach to accuracy, including but not limited to research, fact-checking and objectivity.

The funding amount will vary according to each project. Projects will be assessed on content quality, credibility, accuracy and use of multi-session format.

The deadline is Nov. 30.

Arab Social Media Influencers Summit hosts contest [MENA]

Social media activists and online journalists from Arab countries can compete for an award.

The Dubai Press Club (DPC) organizes the Arab Social Media Influencers Summit, which will take place Dec 10, 2018 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The awards, which are part of the event, aim to honor social media pioneers who have a positive potential of social media for the good of the Arab world and who are able to develop a distinct Arabic content.

The contest has 31 categories covering the government sector, media, sports, tolerance, community service, education, youth, technology, entrepreneurship, environment, economy, culture and arts, security and safety, tourism, entertainment and the public category.

Some categories of the award are available only for individuals, others for honoring institutions and individuals together.

The deadline is Nov. 25.

Training for filmmakers available [Worldwide]

Documentarians can apply for this training.

The One World Media, the British Council in Ukraine and the Docudays UA organize the Global Short Docs Forum (GSDF) March 26 to 29, 2019 in Kiev, Ukraine.

Participants will get pitching training, mentoring, masterclasses from industry experts and one-to-one meetings with decision makers.

Documentary projects must be up to 30 minutes long, either in production or in late stages of development with some existing footage. Applicants must be fluent in English.

The submission fee is GBP25 (US$33). Thanks to the support of the British Council in Ukraine, the application is free for participants from Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.

The organizers will cover travel and accommodation for selected participants.

Beirut Cinema Platform seeks entries [MENA]

Arab filmmakers, producers and directors can submit their projects.

Beirut DC and Foundation Liban Cinema are accepting submissions for the fourth edition of Beirut Cinema Platform (BCP), which will take place March 29 to 31, 2019 in Beirut.

BCP is a co-production platform for Arab independent filmmakers and producers working on feature-length documentary or narrative film projects, in development or in post-production.

The initiative aims at providing the project holders with the opportunity to meet with Arab and foreign professionals in order to encourage partnerships and co-productions. About 15 film projects will be selected to take part in the competitive section.

Applicants are preferred to be able to communicate in English since some of the professional meetings will be with foreign experts.

The deadline is Nov. 21.
