Winzavod Center offers Art Journalism [Russia]

Journalists ages 19 years and older who are citizens of the Russian Federation can apply for this free program in Moscow.

The Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art seeks participants for its "Laboratory of journalism" designed for journalists who are covering contemporary art, design, architecture and fashion.

The program consists of two components: a remote part that includes mentoring from media experts – and a series of workshops with journalists and experts in the field of modern media, history of art and more.

Candidates must have

education in a field of liberal arts or PR and media marketing, as well as work experience related to the program topics and a good knowledge of English.

Artificial intelligence contest accepting entries [Worldwide]

Journalists and others with a project to ensure that artificial intelligence is used ethically and in the public interest can compete in this challenge.

The MIT Media Lab and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University are launching the Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence Initiative, supported by the Knight Foundation, Omidyar Network, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. 

The initiative will invest US$750,000 in ideas aim

ed at shaping the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on the field of news and information. Contestants are invited to answer this question: "How might we ensure that the use of artificial intelligence in the news ecosystem be done ethically and in the public interest?"

Proposals must address the following topics: governance: enabling greater transparency and accountability; platform design: more effectively managing the spread of misinformation and disinformation; bad actors: detecting the presence of sophisticated bots spreading misinformation; and journalism: supporting reporters in understanding and better communicating the impact of AI.

Workshop on public, private pensions available [US]

Journalists interested in retirement issues can apply for this training.

The National Press Foundation (NPF) is organizing the workshop "Understanding Public and Private Pensions" Dec. 2 to 5 in Washington. This training aims to recharge journalists' reporting on one of today’s most critical issues. 

Participants will learn about the state of public and private pensions; pension investment and transparency; workforce and retirement issues; pension modernization and reforms; pension management and debt; and the impact of pension issues on retirees.

NPF will cover travel, lodging and most meals during the four-day program.

HIPA accepting entries for photography contest [MENA]

Professional and amateur photographers ages 18 and older can apply for this contest.

The Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA), based in Dubai, seeks entries in four categories: hope, portfolio (storytelling), general and aerial photography (video).

Photos must not contain any tags, signatures, initials, frame, borders, logos or any other references and/or marks added by the participant.

The organizer will award a total US$450,000 in cash prizes. In addition to the US$120,000 grand prize, five winners will be chosen from each category and will receive US$5,000 to US$ 25,000; and three contestants will receive special awards.

World Nomads offers Travel scholarship for photographers [Worldwide]

Aspiring photographers can apply for a mentored trip to Morocco.

World Nomads is accepting applications for a travel photography scholarship. 

The winner will spend 10 days under the mentor ship of travel photographer Richard I'Anson documenting Morocco's colorful people, culture and landscapes. All expenses, including travel insurance, are covered. The total prize value is estimated at AUD8,380 (US$6,000). 

Applicants must be proficient in English and submit a photo story along with an essay on why they should be chosen for this trip.

Naija Storybuilders Bootcamp ongoing [Nigeria]

Aspiring storytellers who are developing short-form content for digital platforms can apply to attend this training.

Facebook and Afrinolly Creative Hub are organizing the Naija Storybuilders Bootcamp Oct. 15 to 19 in Lagos.

Topics include finding your voice as a short-form storyteller; creating compelling characters; grabbing and keeping your audience; first steps in creating your project; and best practices on how to create and promote content on Facebook and Instagram.

Selected participants will also receive support to build on their projects after the bootcamp, including free office space and mentorship from Afrinolly’s team of screenwriters.

IPC trains online journalists /bloggers on conflict sensitive election reporting

The International Press Centre, Lagos-Nigeria has commence the training of about 60 online journalists and bloggers from across the country on conflict sensitive reporting online.

This is being done in view of the on-going electoral process and the forthcoming 2019 general elections. 

The workshops will take place in Abeokuta, Ogun State on September 18 and 19 and Abuja, FCT, on September 20 and 21. 

A statement by Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, said the training is part of the activities being implemented under Component 4b: Support to the media of the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) project.

According to Arogundade the training will seek to enhance the capacity of the participants to use online media for the responsible reporting of elections by being language sensitive, conflict sensitive and checking hate speech in the online environment.

To ensure the attainment of the objectives, the workshops will feature presentations by media scholars and seasoned journalists. 

At Abeokuta, Professor Nosa Owens-Ibie, Dean, College of Social and Management Sciences (COSOMAS), Caleb University, Imota-Nigeria will speak on 'Understanding communication challenges in the age of conflict, hate speech and fake news' and 'Sticking to ethics and professionalism in online reporting'; Dr. Qasim Akinreti, Assistant News Editor, Voice of Nigeria (VON)/Chairman, Lagos Council of NUJ will speak on 'Giving practical effect to conflict sensitive reporting online' and 'Social Media and Elections: Knowing and Dealing with the Challenges' while Dr. Dan Jibo of the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan will address 'Understanding conflict, its nature and character' and 'Contemporary conflicts in Nigeria and possible impact on media and Coverage of 2019 elections: the pitfalls to avoid in Online Reporting'.

In Abuja, Dr. Ruqayyah Yusuf Aliyu of the Department of Information and Media Studies, Bayero University Kano, will focus on 'Understanding Conflict: Its Nature & Character' and 'Hate Speech & Fake News: Imperatives of Ethics & Professionalism in Online Reporting in Nigeria', Dr. Y.Z Yau, Executive Director, CITAD will present on 'Contemporary Conflicts in Nigeria and Possible Impact on Media Coverage of 2019 Elections' and 'Monitoring of Hate Speech Online: Observations, Lessons and Recommendations from Outcomes' while  Mr. Musikilu Mojeed, Editor-In-Chief, Premium Times will take participants through 'Social Media & Elections: Giving Practical Effect to Conflict Sensitive Reporting Online' and 'News gathering & Newsroom Gate keeping in Era of Hate Speech: Tips on Pitfalls to Avoid'.

La Marea hosts online workshop on investigative journalism [Latin America, Spain]

Anyone can register for this online course in Spanish.

La Marea will host a course on investigative journalism 10 a.m to 1 p.m. on Sept. 22.

Journalist Antonio Maestre will teach theoretical and practical skills to produce a report based on documents, archives and research.

Registration is ongoing until spots are filled. The cost is EUR70.

Photojournalism grants available [Worldwide]

Photojournalists and students interested in working on photo assignments can apply for a grant.

Reuters organizes a photojournalism grants competition.

Up to eight winners will receive US$5,000 each to advance their abilities and tell new stories. Pictures taken by the winners will be distributed on Reuters News media platforms.

Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old. They must submit a CV, a cover letter and a portfolio with 35 to 50 pictures. Check out last year’s recipients here.

AEJMC offers grants for journalism research [US, Canada]

Journalism educators can apply for a grant to research a timely and innovative topic in mass communication.

The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) offers the Emerging Scholars Program and Senior Scholars Grants. The organization will award up to four US$3,500 research and teaching grants to AEJMC members, in addition to up to two US$5,000 grants to senior scholars.

The program seeks junior faculty members without tenure or media professionals who recently began full-time work at a university. Each scholar will be paired with a mentor to provide guidance throughout the project.

AEJMC will showcase initial results from 2019 grants during a session at its 2019 conference in Toronto, Canada. In addition to the grant, scholars will receive US$500 to assist with travel expenses to the conference.

The deadline is Oct. 1.
