Journalism prize seeks entries on transportation, environmental [Brazil]

Professional journalists in Brazil can apply for this award.

The CNT Journalism Prize, organized by Brazil's National Confederation of Transportation (CNT, in Portuguese), aims to promote a better understanding of transportation in a variety of sectors and highlight potential problems within the system.

Submitted work, which must be related to transportation and environmental issues, must have been published or broadcast in the Brazilian media between Aug. 8, 2017 and Aug. 8, 2018.

The organizer will award a total of BRL270,000 cash prizes to the winners of each category --print (newspaper and magazine), photography, radio, television, internet, and environment and transportation and the grand prize, totaling BRL270,000.

The entry deadline is Aug. 6.

Grants for reporting cross-border illicit financial flows, Tax abuse available [Africa, Asia, Europe]

Teams of African, Asian and European journalists can apply for a reporting grant. 

Journalismfund.eu will support stories on cross-border illicit financial flows, tax abuse and corruption in Africa, Asia and Europe, as part of the Money Trail project.

The project will conduct 10 application rounds over the next three years. The total amount per call is about EUR50,000.

Teams must consist of at least one African, one Asian and/or one European journalist.

The first deadline is July 15, followed by Sept. 30 and Nov. 15.

United Nations Correspondents Association accepting entries on climate change [Worldwide]

Journalists worldwide who cover the United Nations, including its agencies and field operations, are eligible for awards.

The United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) is accepting written and electronic works for a U.N. coverage contest that consists of three prizes: print (and online), broadcast and climate change.

Works must have been published or aired between September 2017 and August 2018.

Entries can be submitted in any of the official U.N. languages (English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish and Russian). Entries in other languages must be accompanied by a translation in English or French.

The prizes amount to over US$60,000 that will be distributed among the winners. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres will present the prizes at the awards ceremony in December in New York.

The contest deadline is Sept. 15.

NPK offers workshop on food, agriculture [US]

Journalists interested in agriculture reporting can apply for this training.

The National Press Foundation (NPF) is organizing the workshop "What’s next in food and agriculture" Sept. 23 to 26 in Kansas City. This training aims to recharge journalists' reporting on one of today’s most critical issues. 

Participants will learn the ways food is grown, marketed, sold and wasted. Other topics include labeling, growing methods, GMOs, pesticide and herbicide use as well as organic farming. 

NPF will cover travel, lodging and most meals during the four-day program.

Escuela Nacional Sindical – Colombia organizes documentary photography competition [Latin America]

Professional and amateur photographers living in Latin America can enter this contest.

Escuela Nacional Sindical – Colombia organizes the Latin American Documentary Photography Contest, which focused on the human factor of labor.

The contest has five categories: children workers, women workers, working men, migrant workers, and domestic work and labor economics. There is also a special category for Colombia on rural work.

Winners will receive US$1,000. The winner of the Colombian category will receive US$2,000.

Contestants can submit up to five images.

The deadline is Aug. 31.

Scholarship for Photojournalism available [Worldwide]

Photographers under age 24 and those enrolled as full-time photography students can apply for the scholarship.

The Ian Parry Scholarship aims to help young documentary photographers undertake a chosen project and raise their international profile.

This year's contest features two prizes: the Award for Achievement and the Award for Potential. Each winner will receive GBP3,500 (US$4,568), Canon photo equipment and more. 

World Press Photo automatically nominates the Achievement winner for its Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam. The Potential winner will receive one year of mentorship from a veteran photojournalist.

There is no entry fee. The deadline to apply is July 28.

Tech in Media 2018 contest accepting entries [Russia]

Russian journalists and media outlets can compete in this contest.

The Russian Venture Company organizes the

Tech in Media 2018 contest for innovative journalism. The contest aims to encourage better media coverage of innovations in Russia.

The contest has four themes: life science, hydrogen energy,  philanthropy and technology, and venture business. There will be four categories in each theme: federal print media, regional print media, online media and broadcast media.

Winners in each category will receive RUB100,000, RUB30,000 and RUB10,000 for first, second and third prizes, respectively.

Bloomberg seeks oil markets reporter [MENA]

Experienced financial and business journalists can apply for a position in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Bloomberg is looking for an oil markets reporter to join its energy team and report on a range of energy stories in the Middle East.

Responsibilities include editing breaking news and covering oil trading stories, often working under time pressure.

Applicants must have three years of experience. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential; Arabic or Farsi skills are an advantage.

Registration for Massive Open Online Course on data journalism ongoing [Worldwide]

Journalists and others interested in harnessing data for stories can participate in this five-week course.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, through its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), is offering the free course “Intro to R for journalists: how to find great stories in data"  July 23 to Aug. 26.

Participants will how to learn import different types of data into R;

wrangle, clean, join and analyze data; create exploratory and publishable visualizations; make static and interactive maps with geolocated data and Census data; and join the reproducible research movement and publish their methodology.

The instructor is Andrew Ba Tran, investigative data reporter at The Washington Post.

The course is accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
