Russian World Foundation launches contest for young journalists [Russia]

Russian-speaking journalism students and print, broadcast or online journalists ages 18 to 35 can compete in this contest.

The Russian World Foundation is organizing the contest "Co-Creation" for young journalists.

The competition features three categories: cultural initiatives; Russia's cultural, scientific and tourist potential, and the Russian theater abroad.

The grand prize is a tour around Russia; winners will also receive prizes and diplomas.

The deadline is Aug. 15.

Free Press Awards accepting nominations [Worldwide]

Journalists who have a strong commitment to press freedom and independent information can compete for an award.

Free Press Unlimited, a nonprofit organization based in the Netherlands, is accepting nominations for the Free Press Awards.

The awards aim to honor journalists who risk everything to bring the news to the public, media pioneers who pave the way for equality and justice and those who persevere under the most difficult circumstances.

The categories are newcomer of the year and most resilient journalist of the year.

Prizes include a media scholarship for the newcomer of the year and EUR15,000 (US$17,886) for the most resilient journalist. Both winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Netherlands.

MLDI accepting applications for freedom of expression, digital rights workshop (West Africa)

Lawyers who work and reside in countries that are members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) can apply  for this workshop

The Media Legal Defence Initiative (MLDI) is calling for applications from English-speaking lawyers to participate in a forthcoming litigation workshop on the right to freedom of expression, digital rights, and the Internet.

All applicants are required to submit for discussion a current or potential case involving these matters. Successful applicants will attend the litigation workshop and become members of a digital rights legal network through which there will be opportunity for engagement regionally and internationally.

BBC launches sports reporter traineeship [UK]

Aspiring sports journalists can apply for this program.

The BBC is launching the 2018 Kick Off Trainee Sports Reporter Scheme, which provides a comprehensive training course at the BBC Academy in BBC Bristol, followed by a work placement.

The traineeship starts in July 2018 and runs for five weeks. Trainees will be based at BBC local radio and online sites across the United Kingdom, including London, Manchester and Wales.

Trainees are unpaid, but the BBC covers travel, food and accommodation expenses during training periods.

No previous journalism experience or training is required.

CFI offers grant for political radio programs [Jordan]

Jordanian media organizations can submit their proposals.

The media cooperation agency of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs (CFI), in the framework of EU-JDID program, will support the production and broadcasting of interactive political radio programs.

The selected organization will produce a national talk show on two series between July 2018 and mid-late 2019 in close cooperation with CFI’s consultant. Each series will have 13 episodes, fostering the dialogue between the Jordanian general public and its parliament representatives.

Organizations must have demonstrated ability to produce live interactive audio shows, expertise in parliamentary coverage, audio production expertise demonstrated through a diverse portfolio related to public affairs and ability to utilize social media and other digital tools to build and grow audiences.

Entrepreneurship Hub offers social media workshop [China]

Journalists and others interested in social media can register for a free class in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong University's Innovation & Entrepreneurship Hub will host a workshop on social media 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on May 26.

Participants will learn what’s working and what isn’t in 2018 in social, apps and more; how to cut through the noise using innovative tools and strategies; how to get more followers, like and fans; and best practices.

The instructor is Sree Sreenivasan, digital and social media consultant and strategist.

National Press Foundation hosts online seminar on sexual harassment [Worldwide]

Journalists interested in sexual harassment issues are invited to attend a free webinar.

The National Press Foundation will host the hourlong webinar "How to keep sexual harassment out of your newsroom" at 2 p.m. EDT June 26.

Participants will receive guidance on ways to prevent sexual harassment and foster a convivial newsroom environment.

Panelists include Joanne Lipman, former editor in chief of USA Today and author of “That’s what she said: what men need to know (and women need to tell them) about working together,” among speakers to be announced.

Federal Agency organises Youth journalism contest [Russia]

Russian journalists ages 25 and younger can compete in this contest.

Russia's Federal Agency on Press and Mass Communications organizes the 21st Century Challenge, which recognizes those who report on socially important issues.

Entries must have been published in print media and blogs between August 2017 and July 2018. Categories include culture, multiculturalism, politics and economics.

Winners will receive prizes and diplomas, and will be invited to a workshop and award ceremony in Moscow.

The submission deadline is Aug. 15.

Journalism program focuses on tropical diseases [Africa, Asia, Latin America]

Print, broadcast and online journalists from Africa, Asia and Latin America are invited to apply for this all-expenses-paid program.The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM)'s Journalist-in-Residence Program 2018 offers journalists the opportunity to deepen their understanding of topical issues in tropical medicine and global health during a two-week stay in Antwerp, Belgium.

Participants will work on a project in the realm of tropical medicine and global health (a documentary or a series of articles, for example) and interact with world experts in a wide range of topics in biomedical sciences, clinical sciences and public health.

The initiative is part of ITM’s capacity building program in developing countries financed by the Belgian Directorate-General for Development (DGD).

WSCIJ seeks journalists for regulators monitoring program [Nigeria}

Experienced print, online and broadcast Journalists and freelancers can apply for this program

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) with support of the MacArthur Foundation seeks entries from Nigerian journalists interested in reporting basic education or electricity, to participate in a  course on improved reporting of basic education and electricity issues under its Regulators Monitoring Programme (REMOP).

REMOP is  a media initiative geared at reporting the activities of regulators, including successes and failures, in a bid to promote proactive disclosure of information, transparency and accountability.
