Training on election reporting available [Brazil]

Journalists interested in how to access public data to investigate politicians can apply for this free course.

The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji), with support from Facebook, organizes the series "Electoral coverage based on public information."

The initiative includes three free online courses and four on-site workshops in different Brazilian cities: Porto Alegre, Recife, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Those interested must register up to one week before the online course, which is mandatory for those who want to attend the workshop.

The first online course will be held May 14 to June 1 for journalists who want to attend the workshop on June 9 in Porto Alegre. The remaining courses take place between June and August.

Workshop focuses on reporting land rights [Southern Africa]

Journalists fluent in English and with at least one year of experience can apply for this free workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation, in partnership with Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, is organizing the workshop "Reporting land rights" July 31 to Aug. 3, as part of the Reporting Land Rights program.

The program will assist journalists to produce stories on property rights, whether they are covering business and industry, the environment, urban revitalization, indigenous rights, food security or other topics.

Participants will receive editorial guidance, an intensive workshop to develop stories and share relevant skills, and mentoring to help bring these stories to completion.

Travel and subsistence costs will be covered for participants in Southern African countries. A modest funding to help cover the costs of reporting will be available.

RNRF seeks reports on coverage of natural resources [US]

Journalists who write about natural resources can apply for an award.

The Renewable Natural Resources Foundation (RNRF) offers the Excellence in Journalism Award to advance public education and understanding of important natural resource issues through the dissemination of accurate and scientifically based information about the environment. 

The contest recognizes print or online work by an individual, group or organization, including an online report or article/feature in a newspaper, magazine, journal or newsletter.

Works must have been published in 2017.

The winner will receive a plaque at an award ceremony.

Fellowship for journalists open [Worldwide]

Journalists who want to create innovative approaches to social issues can apply for this fellowship.

The Open Society Fellowship seeks proposals that address new and radical forms of ownership, governance, entrepreneurship and financialization. 

Fellows will receive a stipend of up to US$100,000 to produce a book, journalistic or academic articles, art projects, a series of convenings, a joint-work product or more.

Proposals will be accepted from anywhere in the world, although proficiency in spoken and written English is required.

CNN London offers internship programs [EU]

Recent broadcast journalism graduates or graduates from a related field seeking a career in journalism can apply for an internship in London. 

CNN hosts several internships ranging from newsgathering to special feature programs, digital and sports.

The next intern program will run from Sept. 1 to Dec. 31.

Candidates must be British/EU citizens or have the right to work in the United Kingdom long term.

Program on digital path to innovation, entrepreneurship for journalists available [Latin America]

Professional and citizen journalists, digital entrepreneurs and technologists from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and Peru can apply for this program. 

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), with the support of Professional Fellows, is offering the program "A Digital Path to Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Latin America"  Oct. 8 to Nov. 17 in the United States.

The aim of the program is to create media business models that harness the power of digital tools to generate sustainable new revenue. Fellows will visit digital media organizations, receive hands-on training on digital tools and have the opportunity to workshop their digital media projects with media entrepreneurs. Participants will then be placed in media organizations across the United States for four-week fellowships.

They will also be exposed to events and opportunities that will allow them to experience U.S. life, spotlighting its diversity. The program will conclude with a Professional Fellows Congress in Washington.

Fluency in English is required.

FOTODOC Center focuses on Photo contest between people and state [Worldwide]

Professionals and amateur photographers worldwide can compete in this contest.

The FOTODOC Center for Documentary Photography at the Sakharov Center in Russia has launched the international photo competition "Direct look." The contest focuses on problems pertaining to relations among people, society and state, as well as ways of addressing these problems.

Entries must comprise series of images representing reports, stories or long-term photography projects. There are three categories: "The Problem," "The Conflict" and "The Compromise.

Photographs must have been taken in the past four years. All entry descriptions and image captions must be in English.

The winners in each category will receive RUB30,000 (US$483) cash prize.

Pulitzer Center accepting proposals for data journalism on property rights [Worldwide]

Journalists worldwide can apply for a grant. The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is accepting project proposals for data-driven journalism projects related to land rights and property rights. 

The program is particularly interested in data-driven stories that use satellite imagery, 360° videos, drones, sensors, data visualizations or interactive maps/graphics.

Possible topics include land tenure, indigenous land rights, transparency in land transactions and concessions, resource rights or overlapping land use rights.

Three to five proposals will be selected to receive a grant.

Free training on Community journalism workshops available [Brazil]

São Paulo residents ages 16 to 25 can apply for free training.

The project Você Repórter da Periferia, led by blog Desenrola E Não Me Enrola, offers community journalism workshops and programs in the São Paulo metro area.

The workshops focus on web journalism, writing for social networking, video reporting, photojournalism and video shooting and editing. There are 40 spots available.

Participants will be able to produce stories in the second phase of the program. The activities will be held on weekends from June to December.

The deadline is May 22.

Postdoctoral fellowship program for journalists open [MENA]

Media scholars who graduated from a Ph.D. program in the past three years can apply for a fellowship program.

The Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) is offering a one-year fellowship to junior scholars in social sciences, including journalism and media studies. 

Candidates must be citizens or nationals of an Arab country and show high-quality academic credentials.

Fellows will receive living expenses, research expenses and additional travel funding.

The deadline is June 15.
