Hong Kong Baptist University offers journalism fellowships [Asia]

Journalists with at least three years of experience can apply for this program.

The HKBU Journalism Fellowship Scheme is a new initiative co-funded by the Institute for Journalism and Society (IJS)Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and the Timothy Yu Communication Education Foundation.

The fellowship will take place Sept.16 to Nov. 15 in Hong Kong. Fellows will participate in seminars, visit media organizations and conduct workshops related to their expertise. They must also complete a project and present their findings.

Applicants must be citizens of an Asian country or territory, work in Asia and be fluent in English.

Thomson Foundation seeks application for journalism scholar competition [Worldwide]

Aspiring journalists can compete for an all-expenses-paid spot in a summer course in London.

The Thomson Foundation seeks applicants for its the new Journalism Now Scholar competition.

Contestants must complete five Journalism Now online courses successfully. For its list of free and paid-for courses, click here. The best student will be chosen as the winner.

The winner will participate in Thomson Foundation's digital and multimedia course Aug. 6 to Sept. 7 in London, with a week's work experience in a media organization.

The deadline is June 1.

Grants for women photographers available [Worldwide]

Female, female-identifying and non-binary documentary photographers of any nationality can apply for grants.

Women Photograph, Getty Images and Nikon are offering documentary grants to emerging visual journalists.

Grants, which vary from US$5,000 to US$10,000, can support either new or in-progress documentary projects.  

Applicants are invited to submit a photo story, rather than singles, as part of the application. Multimedia projects are welcome.

Health journalism training open [Brazil]

Young journalists and graduates of other specialties can participate in this free program in June and July.

Brazil's Folha de S. Paulo will launch its sixth training program in health journalism.

The monthlong program will con

sist of daily reporting and news writing exercises, putting in practice Folha's editorial principles. Participants will learn about the process of building scientific knowledge, how to read and interpret a paper and how to understand medical statistics, among other topics.

Applicants must apply by April 29 and take an online exam available May 4 to 6.

Allard prize competition seeks photos of human rights issues, anti-corruption efforts [Worldwide]

Professional and amateur photographers who cover human rights issues or anti-corruption efforts can apply for this prize.

The Allard Prize Photography Competition recognizes photographic excellence reflecting the ideals of the Allard Prize.

Entries should focus on themes of courage and leadership in combating corruption, especially through promoting transparency, accountability and the Rule of Law, and of human rights and/or anti-corruption generally. Contestants may submit up to four images.

The Allard Prize Committee will select up to six photographs as winners. Each winning entrant will receive CAD1,000 (US$780).

Safety training course available for journalists [US]

Journalists who report on crisis and conflict can apply for this training.

The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, a project of the Columbia Journalism School, will host the course "Reporting safely in crisis zones" Oct. 18 to 21 in New York.

Participants will learn how to operate with caution in volatile situations. Topics include risk assessment, digital security, emergency first aid, trauma and rape/assault prevention.

Journalists from around the world are welcome, but they must pay their travel, lodging, ground transportation and meals.

The course is free, with the support of the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, the Rory Peck Trust and the ACOS Alliance.

SIWI offers travel grant for water, development conference [Worldwide]

Journalists from low and low-middle income nations can apply to attend a global water meeting.

The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) will select five journalists to cover World Water Week Aug. 26 to 31 in Stockholm, Sweden.

The SIWI Journalist Grant will cover air travel, local transportation, hotel, meals and the registration fee.

Applicants must have a documented interest in water issues and have a good command of English.

Media Agency organises program for journalists with disabilities [MENA]

Arabic-speaking journalists with a disability can apply for this six-month training program in London.

BBC Arabic organizes the AimHigh Trainee Scheme for Journalists with Disabilities, a program that combines training, support and mentoring.

Applicants must be age 18 and older and speak, read and write fluently in Arabic and English.  

BBC covers all of the travel expenses, including, flights, hotels and transportation.

Lauder School organises Conference on conflict journalism [Worldwide]

Journalists ages 21 to 35 can apply to attend a seminar in Israel on conflict journalism.

Academic and professional journalists will discuss the challenges of reporting in conflict zones at the "Media in Conflicts Seminar" on Aug. 26 to 30 in Herzliya, Israel. The event is organized by the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy.

The conference includes expert lectures, strategic tours of Israel and surrounding conflict zones, hands-on workshops and a fully funded stay in Israel, excluding airfare.

Award seeks reporter with professional accomplishments ( US)

Journalists can enter a competition with a US$50,000 prize.

The John Chancellor Award, sponsored by Columbia University, is given to a reporter with courage and integrity for cumulative professional accomplishments.

Applicants must be nominated by someone else and must provide five to 10 work samples. The main audience of the work should be in the United States, but entries in languages other than English are accepted as long as translations are provided.

The deadline to submit a nomination is April 20.
