Journalism contest accepting entries [Uzbekistan]

Print, online and broadcast journalists can compete in this contest.

The Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan and the International Center for Journalists Training organize the National Award for Journalism "Oltin Qalam" (Golden Pen). The contest is dedicated to World Press Freedom Day, celebrated on May 3.

The contest will feature four categories: television, radio, print and online. Three winners will receive cash prizes and trophies in each category.

Entries must have been published or broadcast between March 31, 2017 and March 31, 2018.

The application deadline is April 10.

Competition on coverage of gender issues ongoing [MENA]

Journalists can submit stories on women's issues in the Arab region to this competition.

Tunisia's Center of Arab Women for Training and Research (CAWTAR) and the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) organize a competition for the best journalistic works on "Sustainable development and gender: the challenges of the Arab region."

Entries should be 2,000 words or less and must have been published between Jan. 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018.

The first, second and third place winners will receive US$2,000, US$1,500 and US$1,000, respectively.

The deadline is April 5.

OKP offers scholarships for journalism courses [Worldwide]

Midcareer journalists from several developing countries can apply for a scholarship to attend an RNTC course in the Netherlands.

The Orange Knowledge Programme (OKP) is accepting applications for journalism courses at the Radio Nederland Training Centre (RNTC). NFP is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and run by the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education (NUFFIC).

Candidates must be from one of these countries: Afghanistan, Macedonia, Albania, Mozambique, Armenia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, Benin, Nicaragua, Bhutan, Nigeria, Bolivia, Pakistan, Burkina Faso, Palestinian Territories, Burundi, Peru, Cambodia, Philippines, Colombia, Rwanda, Congo (DRC), Senegal, Cuba, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Somalia, Ethiopia, South Africa, Georgia, South Sudan, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Sudan, Guinee, Suriname, India, Tanzania, Indonesia, Thailand, Jordan, Uganda, Kenya, Vietnam, Lebanon, Yemen, Liberia, Zambia, Mali and Zimbabwe.

The fellowships cover travel costs, accommodation and the course fee.

The deadline to apply for the fellowship program is March 15.

Journalism program accepting fellowship applications [Balkans]

Journalists from the Balkans can apply for a reporting fellowship.

The Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence program gives 10 journalists from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Greece and Serbia the opportunity to investigate stories at home or abroad with funded research, travel expenses and international seminars.

The fellowship also aims to develop and support Balkan reporting on complex reform issues that have regional and EU significance.

This year's applicants should explore issues based on the theme of truth in an era of fake news and "alternative facts."

Fellows will receive EUR2,000 and another EUR2,000 for travel and research expenses. Applicants must be proficient in English.

The deadline is March 12.

CPLP seeks documentary entries [Lusophone countries]

Documentarians from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste can submit a project to this contest.

The Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP, in Portuguese) invites entries to the DOCTV CPLP III International Contest.

A project from each CPLP member-state will be selected. The documentary must address the country's current reality, have 52 minutes of duration and a maximum budget of EUR50,000 (US$62,048).

The winners will receive a co-production support of up to EUR50,000, participate in a production workshop and their documentaries will be broadcast on public media.

The deadline is April 6.

ABO Capital accepting entries for essay competition [Africa]

College students ages 18 and older are invited to enter this contest.

ABO Capital, an international investment firm, is accepting entries for its essay competition. 

Essays must be 500 words or less and discuss the economic potential of the African continent. Possible topics include ongoing projects in technology, sustainability or agriculture.

The grand prize winner essay will receive a scholarship for one full semester of college. The top three essays will win an all-expenses paid trip to Angola.

The deadline is Feb. 28.

InterAction Photo contest open [Worldwide]

Images from outside the United States are eligible for a prize.

InterAction is accepting entries for its annual photography contest.

Photos must illustrate innovative, effective and inspiring efforts in international relief and development

The contest has three categories: best youth potential photo, best women's empowerment photo and best photo taken with a mobile phone.

The grand prize winner will receive US$1,000. Each category winner will be awarded US$100.

Media Project seeks journalists [US]

Emerging journalists are invited to participate in a program that seeks to strengthen local media.

Report For America (RFA), a project funded by journalists Charles Sennott and Steven Waldman with support from The GroundTruth Project, Google News Lab and others, will place journalists in local newsrooms in under-covered corners of America.

RFA is looking for reporting corps members to spend one year in a local newsroom, with the opportunity to renew. 

The selected journalists will attend an intensive advanced training on Google tools taught by Google News Lab, covering municipal finance and solutions journalism.

The deadline is March 23.

Mercosur's RECyT organizes science journalism contest [South America]

Journalists, journalism students and photographers living in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela can compete.

Mercosur's RECyT has launched the second Mercosur Science Journalism Prize, which aims to promote the communication of science, technology and innovation in the Mercosur region and to encourage a greater presence of these areas of knowledge in the media.

The contest's theme is "Technologies and knowledge economy." There are two categories: writing (junior and professional) and photography.

The first three places in each category will receive a plaque and the recognition of RECyT.

The deadline is April 26.

Grants for cross-border reporting projects available [Europe]

International teams of freelancers and staff journalists, photographers or visual storytellers from participating countries can apply for these grants.

The program "Reporters in the field", organized by N-ost agency, offers grants up to EUR8,000 for cross-border projects.

The grant can be used to cover both travel costs and remuneration.

At least two team members must participate in a workshop June 15 to 17 in Berlin.

The deadline is March 25.
