Journalism School offers food and farming Fellowships [US]

Print and audio journalists can apply for a fellowship to report stories on food systems.

The UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism is offering US$10,000 postgraduate Food and Farming Journalism Fellowships in a program established by Michael Pollan, the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley. 

Suggested topics include agricultural and nutritional policy, the food industry, food science, technology and culture, rural and urban farming, agriculture and the environment (including climate change), global trade and supply chains, consolidation and securitization of the food system and public health as it relates to food and farming.

Candidates must be available for a workshop in June 2018 at UC Berkeley. Travel, lodging and meals for the meeting will be covered by the fellowship. 

The deadline is March 15. Ten fellows will be chosen.

Canal Brasil launches audiovisual projects [Brazil]

Documentarians from Brazil's south, central-west, north and northeast regions can submit their projects.

Canal Brasil has launched its 2018 Project Portal for fiction and documentary series. The call is part of the Public Notice BRDE/FSA PRODAV 02/2016, which totals BRL189,935,394 in funds.

Projects should be between 22 to 25 minutes long or 50 to 52 minutes per episode, featuring four to 13 episodes. There is no theme restriction.

News agency seeks business reporter [#UAE]

Experienced journalists who are fluent in English and Arabic can apply for this position.

Gulf News is hiring a bilingual business reporter to join its team in Abu Dhabi.

The selected journalist will be expected to produce stories and write breaking news copy for web and print on a tight deadline. 

Candidates must have a college degree in journalism and some writing experience, as well as be familiar with online content development, including live videos, and the ability to build a database of contacts and sources that can provide exclusive content.

Howard G. Buffett Fund for women journalists available [Worldwide]

Female journalists of all nationalities can apply for a grant.

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) is accepting applications for the the Howard G. Buffett Fund, which aims to support women journalists in their projects and endeavors.  

Possible projects include exposing under

reported but critical global issues; challenging traditional media narratives; developing field-based expertise and strengthening careers; pursuing training and leadership opportunities; and launching entrepreneurial news projects or acquiring the skill to do so.

Grant amounts will depend on the proposal and the inclusion of a detailed budget.

Applicants must have three or more years of professional journalism experience. Teams of journalists may apply, but the submission must be from a woman journalist and her team must include at least 50 percent women.

Journalism School accepting fellows [US]

Budding and experienced journalists interested in civil rights reporting can apply for a one-semester fellowship.

The Columbia Journalism School has launched the Ira A. Lipman Center for Journalism and Civil and Human Rights, which will oversee a senior and a junior fellowship in 2018.

Although the fellowship is nonresidential, fellows have access to the resources of the journalism school, are expected to give a public presentation at the school and can mentor students.

The senior fellowship is open to candidates with 10 or more years of journalism experience. The junior fellowship is for those who have fewer than five years of full-time journalism experience.

The deadline is March 31.

BBC seeks reporter [Nigeria]

Experienced journalists fluent in English can apply for this position in Lagos.

The BBC is hiring a reporter for a new TV and digital service for children, as part of its investment in content for Africa.

The reporter will play a crucial role creating engaging, youthful and relevant news and current affairs content from Lagos and the surrounding regions. 

Candidates must have lots of ideas for how to engage children in the news and experience of producing content for multiplatform outlets. Fluency in a Nigerian language is an advantage.

Cross-border project accepting entries [Europe]

Journalists and photographers with experience reporting about Poland can apply for this program.

Cafébabel's editorial project Borderline will focus on stories about Polish youth in the Poland's border cities.

A total of eight journalists and eight photojournalists will be selected to produce a photographic and written feature together. The stories can be written in one of Cafébabel’s six official languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish or Polish.

Each participant will receive EUR1,000, which should cover travel and accommodation costs.

Journalism Program on biomedical research available [Worldwide]

Science and environmental journalists with at least three years of experience can apply for this program.

The Logan Science Journalism Program at the University of Chicago's Marine Biological Laboratory organizes two intensive workshops for journalists interested in learning the process of basic biomedical and environmental research in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

The program will take place May 30 to June 7. The biomedical research course is intended for science/health journalists, and the environmental hands-on research course is designed for environmental journalists.

The fellowship covers course fees, room, board and travel.

Online workshop focuses on mobile journalism [Latin America]

Professional journalists interested in mobile journalism can register for this online course in Spanish.

The Center for Digital Journalism at the University of Guadalajara will offer an online course on mobile journalism April 30 to June 11.

Participants will learn reporting strategies and live coverage using mobile tools and social media platforms. The instructor is digital journalist Esther Vargas.

Access to a mobile device is required.

Registration costs MXN2,100 for journalists residing in Mexico and US$100 for those living outside Mexico. The deadline is April 15.

UG Zasto ne offers Journalism fellowship in Bosnia and Herzegovina open [MENA]

Journalists and civil society activists with excellent English skills can apply for this fellowship in Sarajevo.

UG Zasto ne (CA Why Not), on behalf of the Accountability, Technology and Institutional Openness Network in Southeast Europe (ACTION SEE), is seeking applications for its fourth annual international fellowship program.

Fellows will spend one month at the offices of UG Zasto ne and take part in the annual POINT (Political Accountability and New Technologies) conference in May in Sarajevo.

The program will explore topics including the use of technology for democracy promotion, political process monitoring, budget monitoring, advocacy, fact-checking, new media, investigative journalism and media monitoring.

Visa, travel, accommodation and related expenses will be covered by UG Zasto ne.
