Apply for ConDev’s Student Media Grants:Win $5,000!

The Center on Conflict and Development (ConDev, condev.org) is inviting applicants for its Student MediaGrant, a photojournalism grant funded by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation Chair on Conflict and Development.

ConDev—part of Texas A&M University’s Department of Agricultural Economics—works to improve the effectiveness of development programs and policies for conflict-affected and fragile countries through international research, education and projects. The Center uses science and technology to reduce armed conflict, sustain families and communities during conflict, and assist states to rapidly recover from conflict.

Funding Information

Awards will not exceed $5,000 per awardee.

Eligibility Criteria

• The program is open to students worldwide (undergraduate, graduate, PhD, etc.).
• Students graduating in December 2017-May 2018 are also eligible to apply.
• Students interested in capturing conflict-related issues facing fragile and conflict-affected areas of the world through stunning photography.

How to Apply

• Students should submit proposals that describe their anticipated travel, subjects, and plans for photostory production, refinement and promotion as specifically as possible.
• Proposals including all supporting documents must be submitted via email at the address given on the website.

Conference focuses on revenue models for journalism [US]

Journalists interested in monetization strategies are invited to attend this seminar.  

The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute and the Missouri School of Journalism will host "The challenge of creating the most engaging content while maintaining profits" Oct. 12 and 13 in Columbia, Missouri.

The program will cover the best practices for how journalists and other media leaders are engaging audiences while increasing the bottom line. 

Registration is free and includes admission to the event, two lunches and one reception, available to general attendees and presenting attendees while space allows. 

The deadline is Oct. 6.

National Press Foundation offers webinar on tracking police violence [Worldwide]

Journalists interested in data reporting are invited to attend a free webinar.

The National Press Foundation hosts the hour long webinar "How to track police violence" at 12 p.m. EDT Aug. 15.

The Washington Post journalists Julie Tate and John Muyskens​ will talk about “Fatal Force," a database that they developed to track police violence, which won a Pulitzer Prize and NPF’s Innovation in Journalism Award.

Participants will learn about this reporting and the technology behind it, as well as other projects that have stemmed from this endeavor.

Course on land policies and urban development calls for applications [Latin America]

Journalists residing in Latin America who have covered urban development, real estate market, land policies, urban planning and similar topics can apply for this course.

The Instituto Prensa y Sociedad (IPYS) and the Instituto Lincoln de Políticas de Suelo organize a new edition of the advanced course of investigative journalism on land policies and urban development.

The course has an on-site training and a distance learning component. The course will take place Nov. 5 and 6 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during the Latin American Conference of Investigative Journalism COLPIN 2017. The distance learning phase consists of a three-month follow-up to develop an investigative project.

Twenty full scholarships will be offered, including round trip tickets to Buenos Aires, accommodation, a stipend and up to US$1,000 to help participants develop their own projects.

The deadline to apply is Aug. 31.

Travel scholarships available to COP23 [Global South]

Individuals ages 18 to 35 can apply for a scholarship to attend this event.

The YOUNGO Global South Scholarships offer complete financial support and capacity building training to participate at UNFCCC’s 23rd Conference Of Parties (COP23) and 13th Conference Of Youth (COY13) Nov. 2 to 18 in Bonn, Germany. 

The program will also provide online training sessions, webinars, on-ground preparation and mentorship from experienced trainers, as well as opportunities for networking.

Applicants must be citizens from the Global South, including Africa, the Arab States, Asia and Pacific, the Commonwealth of Independent States, and Latin America.

The deadline is Aug. 31.
