Grants fund investigation on cross-border poaching, trafficking [Africa]

African journalists can apply for a reporting grant.

The Wits China-Africa Reporting Project at the Journalism Department of the University of the Witwatersrand, in collaboration with the Hong Kong-based news organizations HK01 and Initium Media, has launched a cross-border poaching and trafficking investigation.

The reporting initiative will cover both the African supply and Asian demand sides of critical wildlife issues such as illegal hunting and trading of ivory, rhino horn, pangolins, donkeys, shark fin and abalone.

The selected journalists will report on the proposed topics, then travel to Hong Kong where they will be joined by journalists from HK01 and Initium Media to share their findings and gain experience in Asian newsrooms.

Candidates must send a proposal and a budget no higher than US$2,000.

Summer school for filmmakers open [Worldwide]

Deadline: MAY 10, 2017

Students in film direction, cinematography, animation, multimedia and computer graphics can participate in this summer school.

The documentary session of VGIK International Summer School, organized by the Russian State University of Cinematography, will take place July 3 to 21 in Saransk, Russia.

The school program includes shooting-oriented workshops, tutorials and trainings carried out by prominent European and Russian filmmakers. The working language of the school is English.

The organizers will provide accommodations, meals and local transportation, as well as the necessary equipment during filming sessions for selected participants.

The deadline for submissions is May 10.

Human rights fellowship for women journalists open [Worldwide]

Print, broadcast and online women journalists who focus on human rights and social justice can apply for a fellowship.

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) is accepting applications for the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship, named for the 1998 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner and Boston Globe correspondent who was killed in Iraq in May 2003.

The selected journalist will spend an academic year in a tailored program with access to MIT's Center for International Studies and media outlets like The Boston Globe and The New York Times.

Applicants must have a minimum of three years of experience in journalism. Non-native English speakers must also have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program. Freelance journalists may apply.

A stipend will be provided, and expenses, including airfare, housing and health insurance, will be covered.

The application deadline is April 11.

Fellowships available for investigative journalism conference [Worldwide]

Journalists in developing or transitioning countries can apply for a fellowship to travel to the 10th Global Investigative Journalism Conference (GIJC17) in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) and Wits Journalism are offering fellowships for established and young promising journalists with a demonstrated interest in investigative or data journalism.

Grantees are expected to produce a story or give a presentation about the conference in their home countries to help spread investigative journalism worldwide.

The GIJC17, which will take place Nov. 16 to 19, will feature the world's leading investigative reporters, top data journalists and experts in security, collaboration, teaching and training, freedom of information and more.

The deadline is May 15.

Visura offers photo grant [Worldwide]

Photojournalists can enter a contest.

Visura, a networking platform for arts and media, is inviting entries for the 2017 Visura Grant.

The grant supports a personal project that brings awareness to a socio cultural and/or political cause relevant to today’s world.

Entries must consist of a photojournalism project made up of a series of images (15 to 35 images), a short synopsis and a long written reflection about the project. 

The winner will receive US$5,000.

The deadline is April 3. Submission is free for Visura members.

Deadline approaching: cultural journalism fellowship in Colombia [Worldwide]

Deadline: MARCH 21, 2017

Print and digital journalists who are fluent in English and have at least three years of professional experience can apply for a fellowship in Colombia.

The Gabriel García Márquez Foundation for a New Ibero American Journalism (FNPI) and Colombia's  Ministry of Culture aim to encourage journalists from all over the world to strengthen their skills in cultural journalism and to narrate cultural stories in English and Spanish.

The program will be held April 26 to May 3. Participants will explore the relationship between journalism and fiction, taking the novel "One hundred years of solitude" written by Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez as a roadmap.

Fifteen candidates will be selected: five from Colombia, five from Latin America and five from other regions of the world. They will receive roundtrip tickets, accommodations, international medical insurance and some meals.

The deadline is March 21.
