Reporting grants available [Africa]

French-speaking African journalists can apply for a grant.

The Wits China-Africa Reporting Project at the Journalism Department of the University of the Witwatersrand is commissioning a series of Themed Grants about the state of relations and interactions between francophone African countries and China. 

Suggested themes include China in francophone Africa, on-the-ground impact, issues of concern, and China and France in francophone Africa.

Candidates must send a proposal and a budget no higher than US$1,500. Proposals can be in French or English.

The deadline is March 30.

Journalism 360° Challenge launched [Worldwide]

Deadline: APRIL 10, 2017

Journalists, technologists, developers and others are invited to compete in the Journalism 360° Challenge.

The Knight Foundation, in partnership with Google News Lab and the Online News Association (ONA), seeks immersive journalism ideas for a chance to win a share of US$250,000.

Proposals should use virtual, augmented, mixed reality or 360° video, discovering new ways to engage audiences and advance the field of journalism. The organizers are looking for projects that will yield lessons and “how-tos” for the field of journalism and encourage reporters and editors to think differently.

Winners will receive US$35,000 in funding to test, refine and build out a project.

School of Data offers fellowships [Worldwide]

Data journalists, developers and leaders can apply for this nine-month fellowship.

The School of Data is inviting applicants to its 2017 Data Fellowship Program. From April to December, fellows will work 10 days a month from any country worldwide and play a key role in the global School of Data network.

Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of US$1,000. In May, they will get together for an in-person Summer Camp (location to be decided) to meet their peers, share their skills and learn about the School of Data way of training people on data skills.

The organization is also recruiting two data expert positions this year – one in Kampala, Uganda and one in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Data experts will receive a stipend of US$10,500.

Travel writing scholarship available [Worldwide]

Deadline: MARCH 21, 2017 

Students and nonprofessional writers can apply for a scholarship.

World Nomads is accepting applications for its travel writing scholarships. Three aspiring writers will win a 10-day travel writing trip in June across the Balkans.

The winners will attend a three-day workshop in Montenegro led by The New York Times and Outside magazine contributor Tim Neville. They will then travel to multiple destinations alone and document their trips.

The scholarships will cover airfare, accommodations and travel insurance. Each writer will also receive EUR1,000 (US$1,066) and a free tour courtesy of the Western Balkans Geotourism Network.

Individuals from any nationality can apply, but interested applicants should have exceptional written English skills.

The deadline to apply is March 21.

Deadline extended: global business journalism program in China [Worldwide]

English-speaking journalists worldwide can apply for a global journalism program in China.

The School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University offers a master of arts degree in global business journalism, which seeks to train future journalists who can help the public understand the complexities of global business and the economy.

The two-year program, a partnership between Tsinghua, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and Bloomberg News, is fully taught in English. Enrollment in the courses is about half international, half Chinese. 

A limited number of scholarships are available to top applicants.

The deadline has been extended to March 20.

Asia Society hosts reporting competition [Worldwide]

 Journalists with works on Asia can apply for a US$10,000 award. The Asia Society seeks nominations for the

 Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia.Nominations are open to online or print journalists who

 produced the best example of journalism about Asia during 2016. 

The Asia Society defines Asia as the countries from Iran eastward, including Australia and New Zealand. It does not include the Arab Middle East. 

Applications are accepted from non-U.S. outlets, but works must have been published in English. Criteria for the prize include consideration for the impact of the work, originality, creativity, depth of research and educational value in informing the public about Asia.

Photo contest seeks entries [Worldwide]

Professional, amateur and student photographers worldwide can enter a contest with a US$10,000 grand prize.

The 2017 International Photography Awards (IPA) are accepting entries in 12 professional and nonprofessional categories - advertising, architecture, deeper perspective, editorial, event, photography book, fine art, moving images, nature, people, sports and special (for submissions that include night photography and digitally enhanced work).

IPA will invite an established curator to select 45 images from both the professional and nonprofessional pools of first, second and third place winners to be exhibited in an exclusive show in New York, during the week leading up to the Annual Lucie Awards event.

The winner of each category will compete for International Photographer of the Year and the grand prize. Other prizes include the Discovery of the Year Award, worth US$5,000; the Deeper Perspective of the Year Award, also US$5,000, provided by the American Society of Media Photographers; and the Moving Image Photographer of the Year Award, worth U$2,500.

Entry fees range from US$15 to US$60 with a discount for entries submitted by April 30.
