Thomson Reuters Foundation organises Stop slavery Award [Latin America, Asia]

Journalists who first published a story about modern slavery by a media organization in Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Bangladesh, India or Cambodia can apply.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation organizes the Stop Slavery Award, which recognize companies that demonstrate integrity, courage and innovation in eradicating forced labor from their supply chain.

The contest has a media category, open to journalists who have produced a highly impactful story, raising awareness and informing society about modern slavery and human trafficking.

The winner will be invited to attend the award ceremony on Feb. 26, 2020 in London.

Miles Morland Foundation offers writing scholarships [Africa]

Nonfiction and fiction writers can apply for a grant.

The Miles Morland Foundation awards annually a small number of Morland Writing Scholarships.

The scholarships are open to anyone writing in the English language who was born in Africa or whose parents were born in Africa.

Fiction scholars will receive GBP18,000 (US$22,646), paid over a period of up to 12 months. Nonfiction scholars, who require additional research time, could receive that amount plus an additional grant, paid over a period of up to 18 months.​

Candidates must submit an excerpt from a piece of work of 2,000 to 5,000 words written in English that has been published and offered for sale.

Journalism fellowships open [Worldwide]

Publishers, programmers, web designers, media analysts, academics and journalists can apply for the 2020 Knight Visiting Nieman Fellowships.

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard offers short-term visiting fellowships for research projects designed to advance journalism. These projects can include topics like programming, design, financial strategies and more.

The fellowships can last up to 12 weeks, depending on the scope of the projects. Fellows will have access to the resources at Harvard, including its scholars, research centers and libraries.

Fellows receive a stipend of US$1,350 per week if not supported by an employer during the fellowship, as well as free housing for the length of their stay at Harvard.

Workshop on innovations in agriculture for journalists available [US]

Journalists interested in the latest developments in food and agriculture apply for this training.

The National Press Foundation (NPF) is organizing the workshop "Innovations in food and agriculture" Sept. 15 to 18 in St. Louis. This training aims to recharge journalists' reporting on one of today’s most critical issues.

Participants will learn about gene editing and GMOs, high-tech agriculture, implementation of the 2018 farm bill, food waste and hunger, organic farming practices and more.

NPF will cover travel, lodging and most meals during the four-day program.

Workshop focuses on journalism and pseudoscience [Latin America]

Journalists residing in Latin America and covering science and health can apply for this workshop.

The Gabriel Garcia Marquez Foundation for a New Iberoamerican Journalism (FNPI) organizes the workshop in Spanish "En busca de la vacuna contra la desinformaciĆ³n" Aug. 22 to 24 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.

Participants will discuss the role of journalism in the struggle against pseudosciences and will learn methodologies and tools to produce attractive and rigorous pieces on topics related to science and health.

Twenty applicants will be selected. They will receive accommodation in Cartagena de Indias, air tickets and some meals.

TLD RU seeks entries on internet domains [Russia]

Russian-language print, broadcast and online journalists who write about internet domains and other internet addressing systems can compete in this contest.

The Coordination Center for TLD RU, with support from the Russian Association of Electronic Communications (RAEC), is accepting entries to the Dot-Journalism Contest.

Prizes are awarded in seven categories for Russian journalists and one category – "Beyond the Runet" – for the best journalistic Russian-language material published outside Russia.

Works must have been published or broadcast between Oct. 1, 2018 and Oct. 1, 2019.

Somedicyt and the Mexican Network of Science Journalists are organizing an online seminar on science reporting in Spanish July 25 to Oct. 26.

Topics include public communication of science, science as news, fundamentals of mathematics and statistics for journalists, enemies of science, and more.

The cost is MXN3,500 for journalists residing in Mexico and US$175 for residents outside of Mexico. Discounts are available to groups.

Writing competition on Climate change available [Worldwide]

High school students interested in environmental reporting can apply for this program.

Climate Tracker is inviting aspiring journalists to write about how climate change affects young people’s lives.

Applicants must write an article about one of these topics: the environment you live in how climate has impacted you and your community; effects of your country’s environmental policies; the youth climate movement in your area; or what you want to tell those making decisions.

The top three writers will receive a month
long mentorship and be featured on the Climate Tracker website. Top 10 articles will be republished on its website as well.

The deadline is July 20 for those interested in pitching another piece about the same topic to an international publication.  One-on-one help will be provided upon demand for topics with the most potential and for those pitching for the first time. If your second article is published, you can re-submit and have both pieces considered for the final deadline, which is Sept. 20.

The Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Art and Literature is a contest for all Arab nationals in the fields of economic studies, architectural design and literary criticism.

The Eurasian Development Bank organizes the contest "Eurasian integration and development - 21st century" for the best journalistic works on regional economic integration and sustainable development.

There are six categories: best publication in a news agency, online media, print media, TV, radio and the best work on humanitarian integration.

Entries must have been published or broadcast between Dec. 1, 2018 and Sept. 30, 2019.

Winners in each category will receive diplomas and various prizes.

EAVE accepting film submissions {Worldwide}

Documentarians can apply for a training program to help them develop their projects.

The European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE) is accepting applications for its 2020 workshops. The three workshops will take place March 6 to 13 in Luxembourg, in June in Ireland and October in Croatia.

EAVE is aimed at producers, both fiction and documentary, already working in the film and television industries who wish to begin to operate on a European wide basis by increasing their knowledge of producing and co-producing in Europe and by building up a pan-European professional network.

The participation fee for those with a developing project costs EUR3,000 (US$3,391). Scholarships are available.

Journalists turned authors eligible for book award [US]

Print, broadcast or digital journalists who have written full-length books can be nominated for a US$15,000 award.

The New York Public Library presents the Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism. Factors for consideration include the book's significance, its influence on public policy and a high standard of reporting and writing.

Books scheduled for publication between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2019 are eligible. Works of fiction, anthologies, collections of columns or articles are not allowed.

Books must be nominated by publishers or agents, not the authors. Nominations must include an application form, 12 copies of the book, reviews and the author's bio.

The deadline is Aug. 30.

Uganda Press Photo Award accepting entries [East Africa]

Visual storytellers in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda can compete for an award.

The Uganda Press Photo Award (UPPA) is accepting entries. The contest has six categories: news, daily life, environment, people, sports and urban. Images must have been taken between Sept. 1, 2018 and Aug. 1, 2019.

The contest includes the East African Photography Award (EAPA), which is open to citizens of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Ethiopia with works published between Aug. 1 2017 and Aug. 1, 2019.

There is also the Young Photographer Award (YPA) for Ugandan citizens ages 21 to 28.

The winners will receive Canon equipment and other prizes, including opportunities to showcase their work and mentorship for the young photographer awardee.

The competition is run by the FOTEA Foundation, in partnership with the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Uganda (FCAU), Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and others.

The deadline for is July 15 for the YPA, and Aug. 1 for the UPPA and EAPA.
