Fellowship on digital tools accepting applications [Worldwide]

Journalists interested in digital media can apply for a fellowship.
The Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism at Ohio State University offers short-term fellowships to help make better use of new online tools and channels. The 2018 fellowship will take place April 16 to 20 in Columbus, Ohio.
Fellows receive a full week of immersive training on digital tools and tactics from leading industry experts. Topics include social media for reporting; branding and audience engagement; spreadsheets and data visualization; smartphone videography; and media ethics.
Print, broadcast and online journalists with at least five years experience are eligible to apply, including freelancers.
The fellowship covers accommodations, hotel and most meals. Limited scholarships are available to reduce travel costs for fellows selected from outside the United States.

NPR Kroc fellowships open [US]

Image result for nprRecent graduates interested in public radio journalism can apply for a one-year fellowship with National Public Radio (NPR).
The NPR Kroc Fellowship will train three fellows in public radio journalism - writing, reporting, producing and editing, for both radio and the web.
Fellows will receive a US$40,000 stipend, benefits and a paid vacation. Fellowships will be primarily based at NPR's Washington headquarters, but may also include an assignment at a member station.
Applications are open to students who have earned an undergraduate or graduate degree on or after Jan. 1, 2017 or who expect to earn an undergraduate or graduate degree by the spring of 2018 before the fellowship begins in August 2018.
Journalism or radio experience is not required. Foreign nationals interested in applying must have the necessary employment authorization.
The deadline to apply is Dec. 31.

Deadline approaching: Mandela Washington Fellowship [Africa]

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, launched by the U.S. government's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), will bring 700 young leaders to the United States in summer 2018 for academic coursework and leadership training.
The program also seeks to create opportunities in Africa for fellows to put new skills to practical use in leading organizations, communities and countries.
The fellowship includes a six-week academic and leadership institute, a summit with U.S. leaders in Washington and an optional six-week U.S. professional development experience and activities in Africa.
Citizens and residents of the following countries are eligible: Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Republic of the Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Journal seeks papers on media and politics [MENA]

Image result for journal papersJournalists, academics and students from the Arab world are invited to submit their papers.
Arab Media & Society, the biannual journal of the Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism at the American University in Cairo, is seeking submissions for its next issue on media and crisis.
Topics may relate to the intersection of regional politics and media, including domestic, intraregional and international. Eligible works include research and narrative writing; analysis and reviews of reports, policy, law and regulations; conference reports; and book and film reviews.
Although shorter pieces are encouraged, submissions may have up to 10,000 words and must conform to The Chicago Manual of Style.
The deadline for peer-review consideration is Nov. 24. All other submissions, including books and conference reviews, shorter research papers and columns, should be received by Dec. 15.

Dow Jones internships accepting applications [US]

The Dow Jones News Fund (DJNF) provides internships to juniors, seniors and graduate students for 10 to 12 weeks at media outlets nationwide.
Interns will attend pre-internship seminars and receive weekly salaries. Travel expenses during training will be covered. Scholarships of US$1,000 will be available to students returning to college.

Contest for education reporting seeks entries [Brazil]

Sponsored by Brazil's National Association of Federal Institutions of Higher Education (Andifes, in Portuguese), the Andifes Journalism Prize aims to encourage media professionals to produce news reports on education, emphasizing the importance of this sector for the country.
The articles or series of articles must have been published in 2016 in Brazilian newspapers, magazines or websites. The categories are K-12 and higher education.
The winners in each category will receive two round-trip airline tickets to any state capital in Brazil.
The deadline is Nov. 17.
