Free webinar focuses on health journalism [Worldwide]

Journalists interested in health reporting are invited to attend this free program.
The Center for Health Journalism at the University of Southern California will host the webinar "How our environment gets under our skin" at 2 p.m. EDT on Oct. 9.
The hourlong webinar will focus on the latest research on how geography and discrimination affect physiology and health. Participants will explore how this new understanding might change how journalists report on health issues, especially among minority and low-income communities.
The panelists are Anthony Iton, M.D., J.D., M.P.H., senior vice president for Healthy Communities at the California Endowment, and Elissa Epel, Ph.D, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco.

Student Leaders Program accepting candidates [MENA]

Undergraduate students from Algeria, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia are eligible to apply for this training in the United States.
The Student Leaders Program is an intensive leadership training exchange program, which includes academic coursework and visits to local and regional community organizations in the United States.
The next program will be held June 26 to July 31, 2019.  
Students will be divided up among U.S. academic institutions where they develop leadership skills and expand their understanding of civil society, as well as the democratic process and how both may be applied in their home communities.
Expenses are fully paid by the U.S. Department of State.

Free media training on risk communication in health care open [Kazakhstan]

Staff journalists from Kazakhstani mass media can apply for this free training program.
The training " Risk communication during health care emergencies," organized by the Central Asia Regional Office of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC/CAR), will take place Dec. 4 and 5 in Almaty.
The trainers are experts in risk communication from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, United States.
Topics include principles of risk communication, preparation of messages for communicating risks and guidance on developing a strategic communication plan for emergency situations. English-Russian interpretation will be provided.
Participation is free, but the CDC/CAR doesn't cover travel and accommodation expenses.

Logan Nonfiction Program offers fellowship [Worldwide]

Journalists, documentary filmmakers, photographers and multimedia producers working on longform, deeply reported nonfiction projects are invited to apply for this fellowship.
The Logan Nonfiction Program is accepting candidates for the spring 2019 fellowship, which will run from February to April at the Carey Institute for Global Good in Rensselaerville, New York.
The program seeks to support democracy by advancing independent journalistic inquiry and investigation. Applicants must submit a proposal on socially relevant political, health, environmental, human rights and justice topics.
Professionals who work in languages other than English are encouraged to apply but must have a working knowledge of English.
The fellowship provides lodging, meals, mentorship and community for up to 10 weeks. 
The deadline is Oct. 15.

Aspiring journalists and programmers can apply for student fellowships in Austin, Texas.
The Texas Tribune is accepting applications for its summer 2019 fellowships. Fellows work full time during the summer.
The organization hosts a range of fellowships focusing on data visualization, reporting, copy editing, photo editing, art, engagement, media relations, multimedia and events. The reporting fellowship can be based in either Austin or Washington.

Chicas Poderosas hosts Design Sprint Weekend [Brazil]

Aspiring journalism entrepreneurs can participate in one of these events.
Chicas Poderosas will host Design Sprint Weekends Nov. 3 in São Paulo, Nov. 4 in Rio de Janeiro and Nov. 11 in Florianópolis.
The program will teach participants how to use human-centered design in their independent media project and will prepare them to apply for the New Ventures Lab (NVL) — a 17-week accelerator program that will provide education, mentorship and access to financing opportunities. The deadline for the NVL is Nov. 20.

Ecological rights center offers seminar for environmental journalists [Russia, Europe]

Environmental journalists and activists from Russia and European Union countries can apply for this free seminar
The ecological rights center BELLONA and the Association of the Environmental Journalists in Russia are organizing the seminar "Quality journalism for environmental activists in Russia and the EU" Feb. 11 to 14, 2019 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The seminar will focus on investigating waste disposal problems, including hazardous non-radioactive waste. Russian-English interpretation will be provided.
Each participant will have one month after the seminar to write an article on an environmental problem, connected to waste management and relevant for their country or region.
The organizers will cover travel and accommodation expenses for selected participants.
Emerging activists and journalists with a passion for environmental issues are especially encouraged to apply.

Contest seeks photos of human rights issues, anti-corruption efforts [Worldwide]

Professional and amateur photographers who cover human rights issues or anti-corruption efforts can apply for this prize.
The Allard Prize Photography Competition recognizes photographic excellence reflecting the ideals of the Allard Prize.
Entries should focus on themes of courage and leadership in combating corruption, especially through promoting transparency, accountability and the Rule of Law, and of human rights and/or anti-corruption generally. Contestants may submit up to four images.
The Allard Prize Committee will select up to six photographs as winners. Each winning entrant will receive CAD1,000 (US$780). 
The deadline is Nov. 1.

Mesa Refuge offers writing residency [US]

Journalists, essayists, economists, naturalists, screenwriters and other writers can apply for a writing residency program.
The Mesa Refuge, located in Point Reyes Station, California, provides time, space and solitude for writers to delve into their work. Topics related to nature, the human economy and social equity receive priority.
The next sessions available are March 22 to April 4; April 5 to 18; A
pril 19 to May 2; and May 3 to 16.
Room and most dinners are provided at no cost, but participants must pay for their own travel.
The deadline is Dec. 1. There is a US$40 application fee.

Training for web writing available [Latin America, Spain]

Media professionals and students can register for this online course in Spanish.
The Center for Training in Digital Journalism at the University of Guadalajara organizes a course on how to write, structure and optimize online content. 
Journalist Brisa Barbosa will lead the program, which will run from Nov. 12 to Dec. 16. The estimated time for the course is 8 to 12 hours a week.
The deadline to register is Oct. 28. The cost is MXN1,800 for Mexican residents and US$90 for foreigners.

Photography Contest accepting entries [Yemen]

Young and amateur photographers from Yemen can apply for this contest.
The United Nations aims to encourage photographers to reflect on sustainable development from their perspective, express it through a photo and share it with others.
Photographers must choose one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that interest them most and, through their photograph, answer the question “what do the SDGs mean to me?” Each participant can submit up to three photos.
The contest has categories for children and adults. Category winners will receive US$1,000. The first and second runners-up will receive US$500 and US$250, respectively.  
The winning photos will be printed and exhibited.
