NED: Grants for Media Projects Available (Worldwide)

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is seeking proposals for projects that advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions.
NED encourages applications from organizations working in diverse environments including newly established democracies, semi-authoritarian countries, highly repressive societies and countries undergoing democratic transition.
Grant amounts vary depending on the size and scope of the projects, but the average grant lasts 12 months and is around US$50,000.
NED is interested in proposals from organizations for nonpartisan programs that seek to: promote and defend human rights and the rule of law, support freedom of information and independent media, and promote accountability and transparency.
The deadline to submit proposals is Dec. 22.

Appalachian Reporting Project seeks entries [US]

The GroundTruth Project seeks candidates for the Appalachian Reporting Project, a partnership with the Galloway Family Foundation to deepen coverage in the coalfields of West Virginia and Kentucky.
Selected journalists will report for the West Virginia Public Broadcasting, Lexington Herald-Leader or Charleston Gazette-Mail, combining daily assignments with an in-depth project that will be a collaboration of the three news organizations.
The project is part of GroundTruth’s pilot for “Report for America,” a public service program for journalists to be embedded in local community news organizations, in partnership with Google News Lab.

Program offers Film Residency [MENA, Germany]

Image result for FILMFilmmakers from Algeria, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, UAE, Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Qatar, Yemen, Sudan and Germany can participate in a residency in Beirut, Lebanon.
The Goethe-Institute Lebanon, Beirut Art Residency (BAR) and Metropolis Art Cinema Association are inviting submissions for the Backstory film residency 2018.
The program is designed to support regional filmmakers in shaping their professional careers by providing creativity-enhancing working conditions. Residencies will take place July 1 to Aug. 31, 2018 and Sept. 1 to Oct. 31, 2018.
Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of US$1,000. The organizers will cover travel and accommodation.
Applicants must have professional experience and be up to 40 years old.
The deadline is Nov 15.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is hiring a journalist for its Ukrainian-language service based in Prague, Czech Republic.
The journalist will produce content for multiple platforms, including internet, video and mobile, and develop new strategies for distributing content and engaging with audiences online and measuring impact of such initiatives.
Candidates should have two to five years of experience in digital media, journalism or communication and expertise in a fast-paced organization with tight deadlines.

Thomson Reuters seek interns [Worldwide]

The Thomson Reuters Journalism Internship program is accepting applications for its 2018 summer cycle. Most internships are in its New York and Washington bureaus, but opportunities may also exist in Toronto, Mexico City and São Paulo, as well as our other Americas offices. Internships last 10 weeks.
The programs are crash courses in business, political and general news reporting. Interns will receive several days of formal training before they start work. Every intern will report to a senior editor and be assigned a journalist mentor who will be available to provide advice and guidance. 
Candidates must have completed at least two years of university, some prior journalism experience, excellent writing and communications skills.
