Journalism scholarship available [Lebanon]

Lebanese journalists, as well as Palestinian residents of Lebanon, can apply for this grant to study in the United States.

The 2020-2022 Fulbright Student Scholarship Program is accepting students who wish to pursue a master’s degree at a university in the United State. The program covers a maximum of two academic years of study beginning in August 2020.

Applicants must reside in Lebanon and have completed (or be preparing to complete) a bachelor's degree before summer 2020. They must also receive a TOEFL score of 80 or higher.

Priority will be given to those applicants who will study journalism, entrepreneurship, humanities, social sciences, political science and other fields that are not available in Lebanon.

The grant covers round-trip airfare between Lebanon and the United States, tuition, books, health insurance and room and board.

The deadline to apply is May 15.

Survey interrogates security challenges facing journalists [Worldwide]

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) has launched a benchmark global survey that will yield unprecedented data on how news organizations are adapting to the digital age.

The results will update and expand ICFJ's 2017 State of Technology in Global Newsrooms report, and reveal how the industry has changed in the last two years.

Chatham House offers fellowship [Africa]

Midcareer professionals from Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Uganda, Mozambique and Zambia can apply for a fellowship in London.

Chatham House is selecting candidates for the Academy Africa Fellowship in the Queen Elizabeth II Academy for Leadership in International Affairs. The fellowship will take place mid-September 2019 to mid-July 2020.

Fellows will conduct a research project of their own design and participate in leadership workshops, project presentations, personal development coaching, media training and other training events.

The fellowship includes a monthly stipend of GBP2,295 as well as a modest provision for relocation, fieldwork and possible publication costs.

Journalism conference offers scholarships [US]

Minority, professional and student journalists can apply for scholarships to attend a conference.

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) offers scholarships for journalists to attend the 2019 Excellence in Journalism Conference, organized by SPJ, the Radio Television Digital News Association and the National Association of Hispanics Journalists (NAHJ).

The 2019 Excellence in Journalism Conference will take place Sept. 5 to 7 in Santo Antonio, Texas.

The Dory Maynard Diversity Leadership Fellows Program is open to journalists who have at least three years of professional experience and are persons of color or from underrepresented groups. Fellows will receive convention registration, accommodation and airfare.

The Terry Harper Memorial Scholarships will award professional journalists with convention registration, accommodation and airfare.

The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism will provide five students with convention registration and up to US$575 for travel expenses.

The Robert D.G. Lewis First Amendment Award is open to students who have demonstrated outstanding service to the First Amendment through the field of journalism.

Applicants must be current SPJ members.

The deadlines range from April 22 to May 8.

Population Reference Bureau offers workshop on reproductive health [West Africa]

Experienced women journalists are invited to attend a regional workshop covering reproductive health, population and development issues.

The Population Reference Bureau (PRB) is organizing this workshop June in Dakar, Senegal, as part of the Women’s Edition program, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

The workshop will focus on the commitment of religious leaders in the West African region to promote reproductive health and the well-being of women and families. Participants will have access to the latest information on reproductive health and development issues, so they can better cover these topics.

After the seminar, journalists are expected to produce in-depth reports, series of articles or radio productions on the themes of the workshop. The authors of the best stories will be invited to attend seminars and study tours in 2020 to learn more about reproductive health, population and development.

PRB will cover travel, accommodations and meals.

Grants for engagement projects available [Europe, North America]

News media organizations in Europe and North America can apply for grants to fund engagement activities.

The Agora Journalism Center at the University of Oregon, with support from Robert Bosch Stiftung and News Integrity Initiative, has launched the project “Engaging communities: reflecting on the work of engaged journalism."

Eight selected applicants will receive up to EUR10,120 (US$11,330) to carry out their projects and attend two cohort gatherings, one in the United States and one in Europe, as well as a cross-border visit to another project.

Project activities include building community networks, making opportunities for dialogue between diverse community members or equipping the public in aspects of the journalistic process, among others.

Organizations must already have some engagement project in the works with their community.
