Gates Cambridge Scholarship in the UK open [Worldwide]

Journalists and others can apply for a scholarship to study in the United Kingdom.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, allows international applicants to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject at the University of Cambridge.

Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate a clear ability to lead and a commitment to the greater good.

The scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge, airfare, stipend, family allowance, visa costs and some additional funding.

The deadline is Oct. 11 for U.S. residents and Dec. 6 for international applicants.

The Atlantic offers media fellowship [US]

Recent college graduates can apply for a paid, yearlong position based in New York or Washington.

The Atlantic is offering a paid editorial fellowship January to December 2018.

Fellows participate in the Atlantic Media Academy, a comprehensive curriculum providing a 360-degree view of the media industry covering the editorial, operational and economic sides of both magazine and digital journalism today.

Fellowship responsibilities may include blogging, copy editing, fact checking, multimedia editing, social media and more.

Online workshop on mobile video open [Latin America]

Journalists, designers, multimedia producers and others can register for this online course in Spanish.

The Digital Journalism Center at the University of Guadalajara offers the course "Video production on mobile devices" Oct. 9 to 23.

Participants will learn how to use mobile apps to produce news videos from a smartphone or tablet, ready to be published on social networks and other platforms.

The workshop will be given by Fidel Romero. The cost is MXN700 for Mexicans and US$40 for residents outside Mexico.

Cross-border journalism program open [Europe, Central Asia]

Journalists from Russia, the Baltic countries, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus region with three to 20 years of experience can apply for this program.

"Perspectives," a joint initiative of the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the Fritt Ord Foundation and the Thomson Reuters Foundation, hosts the "Cross-Border Journalism" program, which will give participants from different countries an opportunity to work together.

The selected candidates will receive funding and distance mentoring, in addition to participating in seminars.

Possible project topics include climate changes, food products and their export/import, media, civil society and more.

The language of the program is Russian.

Harvard offers media innovation fellowship [Worldwide]

Journalists worldwide working for news organizations in a business, technology or leadership capacity can apply for a fellowship at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society will host at least one fellow for an academic year to carry out a research project on journalism innovation.

Candidates must propose a project relating to journalism’s digital transformation. Examples might include ideas for new revenue streams to fund journalism, the construction of new tools for reporting or research into news consumption patterns.

Most fellows receive a US$65,000 stipend. Fellows receive additional allowances for housing, childcare and health insurance.

The application deadline is Dec. 1, 2017 for international journalists and Jan. 31, 2018 for U.S. journalists.

Journalism contest to focus on two-wheeled vehicles as effective transportation [Brazil]

Professional journalists can compete for a chance to win cash prizes.

The Abraciclo Journalism Award aims to promote journalistic works on the use of two-wheeled vehicles as an effective means of transportation. The contest is organized by the Brazilian Association of Manufacturers of Motorcycles, Mopeds, Scooters and Bicycles.

The prize categories are motorcycle, bicycle and the Industrial Pole of Manaus. The first, second, and third place winners will receive BRL7,000, BRL3,000 and BRL2,000, respectively.

Works must have been published or broadcast in Portuguese between Jan. 1, 2016 and Sept. 30, 2017.

The entry deadline is Oct. 2.

MBC seeks senior producer [MENA]

Journalists with at least six years of experience in digital content, series production and documentaries can apply for this position.

The Middle East Broadcasting Center (MBC) is hiring a senior producer to join its team in Beirut, Lebanon.

Responsibilities include overseeing content production, developing new creative digital video content, including the editorial development of storylines, formats and graphics’ guidelines. The senior producer will work closely with the marketing, social media and research teams to improve video programming offering and increase viewership on platforms based on performance research.

Candidates must have basic photo and video skills, knowledge of issues relating to the region and developments in digital storytelling.

Travel grants for data journalists available [Eastern Europe, Central Asia]

Journalists, civic activists and data enthusiasts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan can apply for travel grants.

DataFest Tbilisi 2017, the annual international data and communications event organized by ForSet and the Digital Communication Network, will take place Nov. 15 to 17 in Tbilisi, Georgia.  

This event brings together journalists, civil society and NGO activists, government officials, data analysts, developers, designers and other specialists who are working with data or willing to explore data opportunities.

Topics include open data and good governance, data journalism, storytelling and advocacy, data communication and visualization and more.

The grants cover travel, accommodation and participation costs.

Participants must be fluent in English and/or in Russian.

The deadline is Sept. 20.

Travel photography contest open [Worldwide]

Professional and amateur photographers can compete for the Travel Photography of the Year (TPOTY) Awards.

The TPOTY competition was founded by professional photographers Chris and Karen Coe. Sponsors include Fujifilm, Genesis Imaging, Hurtigruten, Paramo Directional Clothing, Photo Iconic, Plastic Sandwich and Royal Photographic Society.

The contest features three portfolio categories, three "One Shot" single image categories, a "Smart Shot" category for images taken on a mobile phone or tablet, Young TPOTY, a "New Talent" award and an award for the overall winner.

The winners will receive cash prizes of up to GBP4,000 (US$5,171) and sponsors' gifts.

Entry fees are GBP8 (US$10) for the single image categories and GBP15 (US$19) for portfolios, New Talent and HD Video categories. The entry for Young TPOTY is free.

Grants for journalism research available [US, Canada]

Journalism educators can apply for a grant to research a timely and innovative topic in mass communication.

The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) organizes the Emerging Scholars Program. The program will award up to four US$3,500 research and teaching grants to AEJMC members.

The program seeks junior faculty members without tenure or media professionals who recently began full-time work at a university. Each scholar will be paired with a mentor to provide guidance throughout the project.

AEJMC will showcase initial results from 2018 grants during a session at its 2018 conference in Washington. In addition to the grant, scholars will receive US$500 to assist with travel expenses to the conference.
