Grants focuses on climate change, COVID-19 [Asia]

Budding to midcareer journalists can apply for a reporting grant.

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is selecting proposals focusing on how climate change and COVID-19 are impacting communities in eastern India and coastal Bangladesh.

The initiative seeks to improve access to quality information and raise awareness among policymakers and impacted communities. The average grant will be US$500.

Digital, print, audio or broadcast journalists are eligible to apply. Stories can be presented in English, local languages or both. Any stories in local languages must provide the English translation.

WHO offers Health for All Film Festival [Worldwide]

Independent filmmakers, production companies, NGOs, communities, students and film schools can participate in this film festival.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is organizing the second Health for All Film Festival, which highlights global health issues.

The competition's categories are universal health coverage (UHC), health emergencies and better health and well-being.

Entries must be documentaries or fiction films of 3 to 8 minutes in length; short videos for social media; or animation films of 1 to 5 minutes in length. Non-English films must include English subtitles.

The grand prize winner in each category will receive US$10,000. Up to three special prize winners will receive US$5,000.

Investigative Reporters and Editors offers fellowships [US]

Investigative journalists from minority groups or those from low-circulation papers, TV journalists and educators can apply for scholarships to attend this remote training.

The Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) is offering several fellowships for those interested in attending the Data Journalism Boot Camp on Jan. 11 to 12 and 18 to 20.

Fellowships typically include a one-year IRE membership or renewal and boot camp registration fees.

The R-CAR Fellowship is intended for journalists who work outside of a metro area (with a core urban population of 50,000 or more) for a newspaper with less than a circulation of 40,000, a television station outside of the top 100 Nielsen markets, or a radio or online news organization with a record of covering rural areas.

The Ottaway Fellowship is open to journalists and educators of color. The Knight TV Data Fellowship accepts TV journalists.

New Holland launches photojournalism contest [South America]

Photojournalists and amateur photographers can compete in this contest.

The New Holland Award for Photojournalism, sponsored by farm equipment manufacturer New Holland, honors works that portray rural life and agricultural work in South America.

The competition selects photographs to be part of a traveling exhibition in major cities. Photos must have been taken within two years prior to the deadline.

Cash prizes range from BRL5,000 (US$924) to BRL15,000 (US$2,773). Photos that do not receive prizes but are selected for exhibition will be acquired for BRL600 (US$110) each.

The deadline is Jan. 31, 2021.

Disabled Writers is offering scholarships to one ore more Poynter courses.

The catalog of courses covers the following topics: broadcast journalism, multimedia journalism, investigative reporting, data reporting, editing, fact-checking, journalism tools, visual journalism, media law, diversity and more.

Courses are interactive and available to journalists at all levels.

AWiM seeks reports on labor issues [Africa]

Professional journalists who are from a member state of the African Union can compete for an award.

African Women in Media (AWiM), in partnership with the African Union (AU), International Labour Migration (ILO) and International Organization for Migration (IOM), has launched the Labor Migration Media Awards.

The contest will recognize stories in nine categories, including migrants’ rights, diaspora contributions to development, governance of labor migration, gender-based migration, economic impact of migration, migration and health, fair recruitment, forced labor and human trafficking of migrant workers, intra-African migration and news team.

Works must have been published or broadcast between Jan. 1, 2019 and Nov. 20, 2020. 

Winners will receive US$500 each and access to courses under the Labor Migration Reporting Training Program on AWiMLearning.

The deadline is Nov. 20.

Pulitzer Center offers reporting grant on forest restoration, rehabilitation [Southeast Asia]

Journalists and independent media organizations can submit a proposal for a journalistic project covering the issues of forest restoration in Southeast Asia.

The Southeast Asia Rainforest Journalism Fund and the Pulitzer Center are accepting reporting grant applications focusing on forest restoration and rehabilitation.

Applicants of any nationality are eligible to apply but should be based in the Southeast Asia region. Applications can be received in Vietnamese language, Bahasa Indonesia or English. Reporting and publication may be done in any language.

Budget will depend on the specific project.

Independent Journalism Center grants support for campaigns against disinformation [Moldova]

Independent media and NGOs can apply for these grants.

The Independent Journalism Center (IJC), in partnership with Internews in Moldova, offers grants to help fight disinformation and propaganda in the media, as a part of the "Press for Democracy, Integration and Responsibility in Moldova" program. 

The organizers will award two grants of US$5,000 each to support the production and promotion of innovative content that exposes disinformation and propaganda.

IJC will also provide mentorship support in content production and distribution.

The deadline is Dec. 5.

Arab Film Festival accepting submission [MENA]

Documentarians from the Arab world are invited to submit works to a film competition.

The Malmö Film Festival, a Nordic film festival with a focus on Arab cinema, will take place April 2 to 7, 2021 in Malmö, Sweden.

The competition is accepting works for feature fiction, short fiction and documentaries. 

The judging committee will grant SEK15,000 (US$1,500) for the winning films. 

Films must have been produced in 2020 or 2021.

The deadline is Jan. 15, 2021.

Student Journalism Institute open [US]

Student members of the the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Asian American Journalists Association or the Native American Journalists Association or at a historically black college are eligible. 

The New York Times Student Journalism Institute offers opportunities for students in reporting, copy editing, still photography, video journalism and newspaper page design. The program will be held online May 22 to June 6, 2021.

Aspiring journalists will learn to produce material that meets the standards of The New York Times under the guidance of its staff.

There is no cost to attend the Institute. One student will also be awarded an Armando Montaño Scholarship to help with his or her educational or professional ambitions.
