The Institute for Journalism and Natural Resources (IJNR) is accepting applications for a weeklong learning expedition to Bristol Bay, Alaska.

The expedition, which will take place Aug. 31 to Sept. 7, is designed for reporters and editors who are interested in learning firsthand about the various natural resource issues in the region.

Topics include mining in the Bristol Bay watershed; fisheries management, and commercial and subsistence fishing; sports fishing, tourism and the recreation economy; indigenous sovereignty and resources management; salmon ecosystems; climate change; and more.

The Arizona State University seeks candidates for its Fellowship in Transdisciplinary Science. This year's focus is earth and space sciences.

The fellow will spend a month participating in related field work, workshops, conferences and offsite meetings and courses.

Applicants must have a demonstrated record of accomplishment in covering science, technology, environment or medicine in the national or international news media.

The fellowship provides a US$8,000 stipend and a budget for appropriate off campus activities and travel.

Award covers safety training [Worldwide]

Independent journalists and documentary filmmakers who focus on human rights abuses can apply for funding.

The Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma is selecting candidates for the Portenier Human Rights Bursary, sponsored by filmmaker Giselle Portenier.

The award is open to freelancers worldwide, experienced or novice. Applicants must demonstrate a clear interest or track record in casting light on human rights abuses and an upcoming assignment or project with such a human rights focus.

The winner will receive up to CAD3,000 (US$2,132) for hazardous environment training offered by the following approved course providers: AKE, Blue Mountain Group, Dart Center at Columbia Journalism School, 1st Options Security, Global Journalist Security, Pilgrims Group, Remote Trauma or Tundra Group.

National Portrait Gallery accepting entries [Worldwide]

Photographers ages 18 and older can compete in a contemporary portrait contest.

The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2019, organized by the
National Portrait Gallery in London, is accepting entries.  Applicants are encouraged to portray people with an emphasis on their identity as individuals.

Photos must have taken after Jan. 1, 2018. Each applicant can submit up to six photographs.

The first place winner will receive GBP15,000 (US$19,205). One or more shortlisted photographers will be awarded cash prizes at the judges' discretion.

CASW seeks reports on medical science [US]

Journalists who write about science can apply for an award.

The Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting is awarded yearly by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW).

The award goes to a body of work published or broadcast within the last five years which, for reasons of uncommon clarity, accuracy, breadth of coverage, enterprise, originality, insight and narrative power, has made a profound and lasting contribution to public awareness and understanding of critical advances in medical science and their impact on human health and well-being.

The honoree will receive a US$3,000 cash prize. Travel expenses to the award ceremony, held in conjunction with the Science Writers conference, will also be covered.

Editors, colleagues, scientists and others familiar with the candidate's body of work may submit nominations. Individuals may nominate themselves, but are encouraged to send at least one letter of support from a knowledgeable colleague.

Intercom calls for papers on Communication flows, crisis of democracy [Brazil]

The Brazilian Society of Interdisciplinary Communication Studies (Intercom) will host the 42nd Brazilian Congress of Communication Sciences Sept. 2 to 7 in Belém.

This year's theme will be "Communication flows and the crisis of democracy." The program will include workshops, mini-courses, working groups, exhibitions and presentations.

The research groups are grouped by themes: journalism, advertising and publicity, public relations and organizational communication, audiovisual communication, multimedia, communication interfaces, communication, space and citizenship, and interdisciplinary communication studies.

Instituto Prensa y Sociedad de Venezuela (IPYS Venezuela) seeks entries for the ninth edition of its National Investigative Journalism Contest and the first edition of its National Photojournalism Contest.

Works must have been produced in Spanish between March 16, 2018 and March 15, 2019. They may have been published or unpublished. Contestants must demonstrate reporting work in Venezuela. Books or thesis will not be accepted.
