Lindau Nobel Conference offers travel grants to journalists [Worldwide]

Journalists can apply for a travel grant to cover this event.

The 68th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, a conference dedicated to physiology and medicine, will take place June 24 to 29 in Lindau, Germany.

About 600 young scientists from all over the world will meet 42 Nobel Laureates. Journalists will have the opportunity to network with participants and arrange specific interviews with laureates.

Selected applicants will receive transportation and accommodation for four nights.

ABMES Journalism Contest accepting entries [Brazil]

Print, broadcast and online journalists can compete for this award.

The ABMES Journalism Award aims to encourage the production of stories that address higher education in Brazil.

Works must have been published or broadcast after June 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018.

The categories are national press, regional press, national TV, regional TV, national radio, regional radio, national internet and regional internet. The winners in each category will receive BRL10,000 to BRL15,000.

The deadline is June 8.

IJP offers fellowship [Eastern Europe, Central Asia]

Young journalists can apply for this fellowship.

The Internationale Journalisten-Programme (IJP) offers the Marion Gräfin Dönhoff Fellowship for young journalists. The aim of the program is to give young journalists an idea of the politics, economy, culture and social life of Germany, and give them an opportunity to gain work experience in foreign newsrooms.

Staff or freelance journalists ages 23 to 35 from Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and other CIS and Baltic countries can participate in the program. Applicants must have excellent knowledge of the German language.

The program will start in October 2018. Fellows will intern in German newsrooms and work as foreign correspondents covering events in Germany for their countries’ media.

Participants will receive a stipend of EUR3,800, which will cover travel expenses, health insurance and accommodations.

The deadline is April 15.

NYT seeks journalists [Asia]

Experienced journalists can apply for two positions in Hong Kong.

The New York Times is hiring a writer for the Europe edition of its Morning Briefing and a staff editor for its international edition.

The writer will create a daily news guide that highlights the breadth and depth of The Times' stories. He or she must have strong news judgment, writing skills and the ability to collaborate with distant editors and correspondents.

The staff editor will write engaging headlines and correct spelling, grammar and other mistakes. Candidates must have at least five years of editing experience in a daily news operation.

Finland Program offers scholarship [Worldwide]

Aspiring journalists can apply for a foreign correspondents’ program in Finland.

This program, sponsored by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, provides an opportunity for students to learn about the work of a correspondent in a foreign country and experience Finnish society.

Participants will meet with professionals and politicians, spend a weekend with a Finnish family and take cultural trips. The program takes place Aug. 6 to 24.

The scholarships cover flights, accommodation in a student residence, meals and events.

The program is open to citizens from the following countries: Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Republic of Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand and United States.

Applicants must be fluent in English and born between 1989 and 1998.

The deadline to apply is March 30.

CFPD hosts Cultural journalism course [Latin America, Spain]

Working journalists and journalism students interested in cultural reporting can register for this course.

Mexico's Centro de Formación en Periodismo Digital (CFPD) is hosting an online course on cultural journalism May 7 to June 17.

Participants will explore the sociocultural aspects of their surroundings to produce quality content specializing in cultural issues from an ethical and aesthetic perspective. The instructor is veteran journalist Rosa Esther Juárez.

Registration costs MXN2,000 (US$100).

The deadline to register is April 22.

ILO offers Journalism fellowship on labor migration [MENA]

Media professionals in Lebanon, Jordan and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states who are passionate about human rights, migration and labor issues can apply for this fellowship.

The International Labor Organization (ILO), in partnership with the Ethical Journalism Network, organizes the six-month Labor Migration Journalism Fellowship Program.

Participants will take part in an expert training program on reporting and storytelling on labor migration, be provided with editorial support from a board of mentors and receive a US$1,500 stipend to cover field work to produce a series of in-depth stories on labor migration.

Reports and multimedia will be published on the ILO and partner websites in English and Arabic.

News University offers Free webinar on rebuilding trust in the media [Worldwide]

Journalists and academics interested in improving journalism's reputation and reception can attend this online course.

News University, the Poynter Institute e-learning project, is offering the course "Hooked on junk news: breaking bad habits and rebuilding trust in the media" at 2 p.m. EDT April 26.

Participants will learn how the general public perceives some of the issues that dominate today’s conversations about the media; understand why building media literacy is essential; discover easy-to-share media literacy concepts; learn how to employ NewseumED’s free resources to improve conversations about topics like fake news or sponsored content and to help foster media literacy.

The instructor is Kristi Kenneth, curriculum developer at the Newseum.

Writing grant available [US]

Writers of all skills and experience levels can apply for this grant.

The North American Guild of Beer Writers, with support from CraftBeer.com, has launched the Diversity in Beer Writing Grant. The grant aims to highlight the value of stories that showcase diversity and inclusion within beer.

Contestants must submit a cover letter, two samples of work, and a pitch for their story idea that explores areas of diversity and inclusion in beer.

The winner will receive US$1,000, and his or her story will be published on CraftBeer.com.

Stringers Africa organises Women in the Media Conference {Nigeria}

Journalists and others can attend this event.

The African Women in the Media 2018 Conference, organized by Stringers Africa, will take place June 21 and 22 in Ibadan. This year's topic is visibility.

The symposium aims to address issues affecting African women in the media, provide an opportunity for the exchange of ideas between academia and industry, and offer opportunities for networking.  

Participants who want to present a paper have until March 26 to submit an abstract.

Registration is open, but spots are limited. The early-bird registration fee, before March 30, costs US$85. Regular registration costs US$140.
