ACSS offers fellowships for journalists, researchers [MENA]

Researchers and journalists across the Arab world can apply for a grant.

The Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) is accepting applications for the seventh cycle of its Early Career Fellows Program (ECFP).

This 12-month fellowship program aims at enabling early career researchers, up to three years out of a Ph.D., to pursue their research and publishing plans, become part of Arab research networks and plan a research career in the Arab region.

The fellowship will provide living and research expenses, with a total stipend ranging between US$20,000 and US$36,000.

Applicants should have obtained a Ph.D. at the time of application.

Journalists reporting on the coronavirus pandemic are invited to attend these hourlong webinars.

The Center for Health Journalism at the University of Southern California has launched “Covering coronavirus,” a special webinar series that will provide tips, resources and insights about the COVID-19 pandemic.

The webinars will take place at 1 p.m. EDT.  The upcoming one is "A top reporter’s daily routine" on April 8, followed by "Life and death decisions" on April 15 and "Street reporting without the street" on April 22.

Wiki Loves Africa is an annual contest, hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, where people across Africa can contribute photos about their environment to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the foundation.

This year, the competition seeks submissions about the theme "Africa on the Move or Transport," which can be representations of movement, migration or transportation, whether local or regional, by path, road, sea or air, self-propelled or by animal, natural or mechanical means.

The first, second and third place winners will receive US$1,000, US$800 and US$500. Two other categories ­–culturally specific or traditional representations of transport or structures that facilitate transportation and best quality video (audio and visual quality and storytelling will be taken into account) – offer a US$500 prize each.

IWMF offers relief fund for journalists [Worldwide]

Women-identifying and non-binary journalists facing financial hardship can apply for this new fund.

The International Women Media's Foundation (IWMF) is accepting candidates for its Journalism Relief Fund.

The fund is intended for journalists who have lost work, were recently laid off or urgently need assistance, such as living assistance to prevent homelessness and food insecurity; acute medical care and mental health services; childcare; and legal support. 

Selected journalists will receive small grants of up to US$2,000. 

Applicants must not have any other source of income available at this time, have worked full time as a journalist within six months of applying for assistance and be directly impacted by the global health crisis.

Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

Russell Sage Foundation offers journalism fellowship [US]

Journalists with at least five years of experience who report on social, economic or political conditions in the United States can apply for a fellowship in New York.

The Russell Sage Foundation Visiting Journalist Fellowship provides journalists an opportunity to carry out their projects while interacting with resident visiting scholars. The next program will take place September 2020 to June 2021.

Possible research topics include the growth of economic inequality and its consequences, inequities in educational achievement and attainment, the impact of modern immigration, and racial tensions over urban policing.

Visiting journalists receive an honorarium of US$8,000 per month for one to three months, an office at the Foundation, computers and software, library access and limited research assistance. Applicants who reside outside of the greater New York area will be provided with a partially-subsidized apartment.
