IFFR seeks applicants for young film training project [Worldwide]

Journalists ages 30 and younger can apply for a training program in the Netherlands.

The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) seeks applicants for its training program Jan. 23 to Feb. 3, 2019. The IFFR Trainee Project for Young Film Critics offers motivated and talented journalists a chance to cover a major international film festival.

The program includes reporting on the festival, publishing a blog on IFFR's website, meeting with experienced film critics and reporting for participants' home media outlets.

The organizers will cover hotel accommodations and partial refunds of travel costs when participants are traveling from outside Europe.

Candidates must have fluent written and spoken English, and should not be established critics. They should be affiliated with a print or online media outlet to report on the festival. Typically up to four journalists from outside Netherlands are chosen to attend.

The application deadline is Nov. 15.

Escuela de Periodismo UAM/El País offers workshop on reporting Africa [Spain]

The Escuela de Periodismo UAM/El País is organizing a one-day workshop on Africa reporting Nov. 24 in Madrid.

The workshop will address some of the essential aspects when reporting on areas of conflict and humanitarian crises in Africa. The stereotyped image of the continent will also be discussed.

The instructor, freelance journalist José Naranjo, will give recommendations to report positively on African issues.

Course on financial investigative journalism, digital security available [Asia]

Working journalists, campaigners and academics based in Asia can apply for a bursary to attend this course.

Finance Uncovered is organizing a training course in financial investigative journalism and digital security Feb. 25 to March 1, 2019 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Participants will learn how to investigate corporate accounts, offshore activities and corporate corruption as well as where to find documents, how to analyze them and other practical tools to help uncover financial secrecy.

Bursaries cover visa fees, travel and accommodations.

Scholarships for data journalists available[Kyrgyzstan]

Journalists and journalism students from Kyrgyzstan can apply for this training program.

The Internews's Media-K project offers scholarships to attend a 12-month training program in data journalism. The training will take place in Bishkek.

This program will give participants theoretical and practical knowledge needed to produce data journalism, including data searching, extraction, cleansing, refinement, analysis and visualization.

During the program, participants will work in teams. Each team is expected to create six innovative data journalism articles.

Each participant will receive a US$3,000 per year stipend.

Contest seeks women inclusion [Africa]

Digital startups that have a positive impact on women's inclusion and the reduction of gender inequalities can enter this contest.

The French Development Agency (AFD, in French) and Digital Africa are organizing the AFD Digital Challenge.

The challenge aims to promote entrepreneurial initiatives managed by women and/or men, tackling the challenges of gender inequalities and leveraging digital innovation for their development.

Media projects, among others, that deconstruct gender stereotypes are eligible.

The winners will receive EUR15,000 (US$17,380) to EUR50,000 (US$57,936).

ICFJ offers online course on money laundering [Latin America, Caribbean]

Journalists from Bolivia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Honduras, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Dominica, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Jamaica, Bahamas, Nicaragua, Panama,  Santa Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela can enroll in this course.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project(OCCRP) are offering an online course on methods to investigate money laundering routes. The course will run Nov. 15 to Dec. 6.

Participants will learn how criminal financial infrastructures are established, what money laundering is and how it works across borders, how the international banking system is used by criminal organizations and more.

The deadline is Nov. 11.

SuSanA offers program on water, sanitation problems [Lebanon, Jordan]

Women journalists from Lebanon and Jordan can apply to attend this workshop in Jordan.

The Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is organizing a three-day workshop on water and sanitation problems in the region (dates to be announced).

In coordination with the Breman Overseas Research and Development Association, the organizer will select five female environmental journalists to take part in this program to search for a story that will ultimately bring to the fore a real and current water and sanitation issue.

The participating journalists will then be fully funded for a five-day expedition in either Jordan or Lebanon to write-up an investigative story of their choosing.

The stories will be published on the SuSanA platform and through international and regional media channels.

Registration ongoing for 3i Festival on elections coverage, innovative journalism [Brazil]

Journalists, media entrepreneurs and students can attend this event.

The 3i Festival - Innovative, Inspiring and Independent Journalism will take place Nov. 10 in Recife. The festival is organized by Agência Lupa, Agência Pública, BRIO, JOTA, Nexo, Nova Escola, Ponte Jornalismo, Repórter Brasil and Google News Initiative.

The program will cover the 2018 electoral coverage and the future of journalism in a polarized country, technological innovations and how to be successful in raising funds for a journalism project.

Special guests include Daniela Pinheiro (Época magazine); Beatriz Ivo (Sistema Jornal do Commercio); Cristina Tardáguila (Agência Lupa); Saulo Moreira,  (Regional Electoral Tribunal); and Helena Portilho (videodocumentary project "Além da Cura").

CDC/CAR offers media training on risk communication in health care [Kazakhstan]

Staff journalists from Kazakhstani mass media can apply for this free training program.

The training " Risk communication during health care emergencies," organized by the Central Asia Regional Office of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC/CAR), will take place Dec. 4 and 5 in Almaty.

The trainers are experts in risk communication from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, United States.

Topics include principles of risk communication, preparation of messages for communicating risks and guidance on developing a strategic communication plan for emergency situations. English-Russian interpretation will be provided.

Participation is free, but the CDC/CAR doesn't cover travel and accommodation expenses.

Multimedia internship program available [Mozambique]

Aspiring journalists can apply for this 10-month program in Maputo.

IREX's Programa para Fortalecimento da Mídia is accepting candidates for its multimedia internship.

Two participants chosen from each province will learn journalism techniques and work on multimedia products, TV news, newspaper publishing and online news.

Candidates must be college graduates, fluent in Portuguese and available to work full time.
