Nonprofit fact-checking organization Chequeado, based in Argentina, is organizing a course on fact-checking and data journalism June 21 to Aug. 2.

Participants will learn to apply the fact-checking methods most used by Chequeado and how to tell compelling data-based stories.

Environmental Health Reporting Grant Available [Worldwide]

Freelance journalists can apply for a new grant.

The Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) seeks submissions for the Lizzie Grossman Grant for Environmental Health Reporting, in honor of Elizabeth Grossman, a longtime SEJ member who devoted her career to uncovering environmental health issues.

The grant will provide up to US$5,000 to help cover travel and other expenses related to sustained coverage (e.g., a series of articles) of a particular topic in environmental health.

Applicants must be SEJ members. Annual membership starts at US$15 for international journalists.

Victor Cohn Prize seeks reports in medical science [US]

Journalists who write about science can apply for an award.

The Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting is awarded yearly by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW).

The award goes to a body of work published or broadcast within the last five years which, for reasons of uncommon clarity, accuracy, breadth of coverage, enterprise, originality, insight and narrative power, has made a profound and lasting contribution to public awareness and understanding of critical advances in medical science and their impact on human health and well-being.

The honoree will receive a US$3,000 cash prize. Travel expenses to the award ceremony, held in conjunction with the ScienceWriters conference, will also be covered.

Editors, colleagues, scientists and others familiar with the candidate's body of work may submit nominations. Individuals may nominate themselves, but are encouraged to send at least one letter of support from a knowledgeable colleague.

Workshop highlights resources for foreign correspondents [Spain]

Journalists and students can register for this course.

The Escuela de Periodismo UAM/El País is organizing the workshop "Claves para convertirse en enviado especial" ("Keys to become a foreign correspondent") May 19 in Madrid.

Participants will learn how to prepare for the coverage of an unexpected or scheduled event anywhere in the world, including the elaboration of reporting plan and what to bring in the suitcase.

The Calvert Journal accepting photo entries [Eastern Europe, Central Asia]

Amateur and professional photographers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan are eligible.

The Calvert 22 Foundation and The Calvert Journal are accepting entries for the New East Photo Prize, which aims to reward outstanding projects that offer an insightful, contemporary perspective on people and countries in the region.

Entries must comprise projects (or series of images) in any style or genre, including portrait, landscape, documentary or contemporary art and architecture that were made within the last two years.

The New East Photo Prize winner will receive a cash prize of GBP1,000 (US$1,351) and will have his or her project showcased in a special exhibition at Calvert 22 Foundation in London.

Additionally, two prizes will be awarded: the Fabrika Travel Photography Prize – featuring a five-day trip to Georgia – and the Metro Imagining Mentorship Award – whose winner will be fully supported over a 12-month period and receive GBP1,000 credit with Metro Imaging.

Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award focuses on war correspondents [Worldwide]

War correspondents worldwide can enter a competition.

The Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for War Correspondents, sponsored by the Calvados General Council, the town of Bayeux, France, and others, honors coverage of conflict situations or news events relating to the fight for freedom and democracy.

Categories include young reporters, long and short-form TV, radio, print, online and photojournalism. The winner of each category will receive EUR7,000 (US$8,304). There are also four special prizes, ranging from EUR3,000 (US$3,579) to EUR4,000 (US$4,773). 

The report must have been published between June 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018.

The deadline is June 8.

Global Health Journalism Grant open [Germany]

Freelance and staff journalists interested in shedding light on health-related issues in developing countries can apply for this program.

The European Journalism Centre (EJC) is accepting pitches for the Global Health Journalism Grant Program for Germany.

EJC will provide story grants worth between EUR5,000 and EUR20,000, including potential travel and technical expenses.

Fellows must produce original German reporting for relevant German media organizations or outlets with a relevant audience reach in Germany.

Media Conference highlights attacks on free press [Asia Pacific]

Media professionals are invited to attend this conference.

The East-West Center will host the sixth International Media Conference June 24 to 27 in Singapore. The event will be preceded by a two-day workshop on "Hoax-Busting and Online Verification" with trainers from Storyful, Google News Lab and Facebook.

The conference program will focus on cutting-edge media trends, disinformation, attacks on free press and other transformative stories in the Asia Pacific region. 

The early registration fee costs US$275, including workshops, the opening reception, keynote dinner, three lunches, a half-day city tour, coffee/tea/snack breaks and conference materials.

Media Agency accepting applications for Social innovation fellowship [Worldwide]

Journalists who have developed business endeavors that address social needs are encouraged to apply for this fellowship in Chicago.

In partnership with Chicago Ideas Week, the Bluhm/Helfand Social Innovation Fellowship will grant visionary leaders with community support, exposure to successful business leaders and a US$10,000 financial contribution for their business project.

The fellowship was established by two philanthropists and entrepreneurs, Leslie Bluhm and David Helfand, who wish to help the next social innovators and entrepreneurs confront social needs.

The winning recipients will be hosted in Chicago during Chicago Ideas Week on Oct. 15 to 21, with all expenses paid.  

Applicants must be 35 years old or younger and working as for-profit or nonprofit social entrepreneurs.

Estratosfilmes organizes film festival [Brazil]

Documentarians can submit their short films to this event.

Estratosfilmes and Kinoptera are organizing a permanent film festival at Cine Cultura in Goiânia. This free event will be held every Saturday for a year starting in July.

The organizers will select 100 films on any topic, of up to 25 minutes in length, spoken or subtitled in Portuguese and made after the year 2000.

Each film that will be featured in the festival will receive BRL400.
