José Reis Award seeks science, technology journalism entries [Brazil]

Media outlets who have contributed to the communication of scientific knowledge in Brazil can compete for an award.

Brazil's National Council for Scientific and Technological Development offers the 

José Reis Prize to recognize the work of a media organization who has made science, technology and innovation news available to the public.

The winning organization will receive a trophy and a diploma. In addition, its representative will attend the Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) in July in Maceió, Alagoas state.

Media Agency accepting applications for program manager [South Africa]

Media professionals can apply for this position in Johannesburg.

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Media Africa is looking for a full-time or part-time program manager.

Responsibilities include professional documentation of KAS events; writing and editing of analyses and publications on media and politics in the region; media relations with journalists and agenda setting; optimize social media platforms and the website; and more. 

Candidates must have experience in the field of media and politics, knowledge of basics and trends in social media, broad knowledge of the Sub-Saharan region and excellent English and French skills. German would be an asset.

Mophradat organizes journalism residency [MENA]

Fiction and nonfiction writers, journalists, critics or curators, artists and academics can apply for a writing residency in Brussels, Belgium.

Mophradat is organizing its journalism residency for Arab writers. The residencies are intended to provide an opportunity to focus on a specific writing project for a period of six weeks.

Participants will receive airfare, accommodation, a weekly stipend and reimbursement of visa costs.

Applicants whose practice is in the Arabic language will be given priority.

Free online course on journalists' safety available [Latin America, Spain]

Journalists working in print, electronic or digital media and other media professionals working in difficult circumstances can register for this five-week online course.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and the International Women’s Media Foundation(IWMF) are organizing the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in Spanish “Risk and safety in journalism in Latin America: Practical steps for self-protection" March 26 to April 22.

Participants will learn the concepts of risk and threat, know the risks they may face in the digital world and learn strategies to protect themselves and their sources. The course will also feature tools to develop a self-protection plan and advice for stress and trauma management.

The instructor is journalist and human rights defender Claudia Julieta Duque.

Foundation hosts photo contest [Worldwide]

Photographers around the world can enter this contest.

The My Equator Social Support Charity Foundation is accepting works for its annual photo contest "Golden Turtle."

Categories include documentary photo, new technologies in wildlife photo, photographer of the year and more.

The official languages of the competition are Russian and English.

The first place prizes in each category are US$10,000. The prize for the photographer of the year is US$20,000.

OSF seeks entries for photography projects on migration [Worldwide]

Photographers and media makers can submit their work for consideration.

The Open Society Foundations are soliciting proposals for the Documentary Photography Project's Moving Walls 25: exhibition and fellowship. The project is accepting photo-based, documentary projects that address migration issues.

The program is interested in showcasing the work of photographers and artists who expand the visual language of documentary photography, including those who use new or creative visual strategies, investigative/storytelling approaches or technologies.

The exhibition will launch on Sept. 27 in New York. The foundations will cover participants' travel and accommodation costs to attend the exhibition's opening reception and related events.

Selected photographers will also receive a fellowship of US$30,000 to US$$60,000 to support ongoing or future work on the theme of migration.

Special consideration will be given to work that comes from the perspective of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers themselves, or is made through sustained and meaningful collaboration with these communities. Up to seven projects will be selected.

National Press Club organizes journalism competition [US]

Journalists can enter a contest featuring 14 categories with prizes ranging from US$750 to US$1,000.

The National Press Club presents its annual journalism competition honoring the best in traditional and newer forms of journalism.

Categories include political reporting, regional reporting on Washington, consumer reporting, press criticism, diplomatic correspondence, newsletter journalism and photography.

It also features a group of awards for areas as diverse as reporting on the welfare of animals, coverage of the journalism industry, the aviation industry, problems facing the elderly and humor writing.

Seminar for senior journalists available [Asia, US, Canada, Europe, MENA]

Senior print, radio, broadcast, and online journalists from the U.S. and countries with substantial Muslim populations can apply for this seminar.

The East-West Center is accepting applications for its Senior Journalists Seminar. The program is a professional dialogue, study and travel program that seeks to bridge the gaps between the United States and the Muslim world.

The seminar is scheduled for Sept. 3 to 27. Participants will travel to Washington, Detroit and Honolulu as well as Yangon, Myanmar and Tunis/Djerba, Tunisia.

Journalists covering all relevant beats from the following countries are eligible to apply: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Burma, China, India, Iran, Iraq, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the United States.

In addition, journalists who specifically cover art and/or culture, including race and/or minority issues, from the following countries are also eligible:  Algeria, Belgium, Canada, Chad, Cyprus, England, Egypt, France, Germany, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Mali, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE and Yemen.

Accepted applicants will receive roundtrip airfare for the study tour, lodging, ground transportation, program-related meals and a modest per diem. They will have to pay a fee of US$800 for other expenses related to the trip.

Thomson Foundation hosts Mobile journalism contest [Worldwide]

Anyone age 18 and older can enter this contest.

The Thomson Foundation, in partnership with Mojofest in Ireland, seeks submissions for its mobile journalism competition.

Contestants must submit a 2- to-5-minute long journalism story shot and edited entirely on a mobile device (iOS, Android, Windows Phone, RIM Blackberry, etc). Entries not in English must include subtitles.

The winner will receive a mojo kit worth EUR1,000 (US$1,233) as well as flights to Ireland, accommodations and tickets to the Mojofest conference May 29 to 31 in Galway, Ireland.
